He underwent treatment early in the season, being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia which led him to an indefinite leave from his coaching duties, but after three months of treatment his cancer went into remission, and he went back to coaching later in the year, eventually helping the Colts to an 11-5 record before they were defeated in the Wild Card round. He continued to consistently perform well with the team the following season, leading them to the top of the AFC South, but losing during the second round of the playoffs. The following year, they reached the playoffs once again, heading to their first AFC Championship Game which they lost against the New England Patriots. The Colts struggled the following season and missed the playoffs, but Chuck was still given a contract extension.
