Chris Carter Wiki Biography

Chris Carter is an American screenwriter, television and film producer, as well as a television and film director. How rich is Chris Carter? According to sources, Chris Carter’s net worth is estimated to be $40 million. Chris Carter accumulated the majority of his net worth by having created a number of television series that instantly became popular among the audiences. Born in 1957, in Bellflower, California, Chris Carter attended California Beach University and graduated with a degree in journalism, which heavily contributed to his first job. Carter worked for a monthly “Surfing Magazine” and became an editor at the age of 28. He then proceeded to work there for thirteen years before trying himself out in the entertainment business.

Carter’s work in television began in 1986 with the creation of “The B.R.A.T Patrol”, which was followed by “Meet the Munceys” in 1988. Eventually Carter met a then-president of the NBC network Brandon Tartikoff, and having signed the contract released several unproduced television pilots, including “Cameo by Night” with Sela Ward, “Brand New Life” and “Copter Cop”. Several years later, Carter began working on a show that significantly boosted his earning, and, as a result, his net worth as well.

In 1993 with a budget of $2 million, Carter created a now popular science fiction horror drama series “The X-Files”. The show with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in leading roles slowly built its popularity and won its first Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama. “The X-Files” broke the record for the highest price paid by the network to air re-runs with 600 thousand paid by FX network for a single episode. Carter’s ability to negotiate profitable contracts is one of the reasons for his $40 million net worth. Following the success of “The X-Files”, Carter ventured on to create another horror and supernatural drama series titled “Millennium”. The main characters in the show that revolves around the life of an FBI agent were portrayed by Lance Henriksen, Megan Gallagher and Klea Scott. Unfortunately, even though the show seemed to be promising, as it premiered with impressive ratings, the viewership began to decline and it was cancelled after three seasons and a total of 67 episodes. Not as successful as its predecessor, the show still plays an important part in Carter’s directing history and bears a contribution to his total net worth.

In addition to creating television series, Chris Carter tried his luck in making movies, some of which include “The X-Files” film that grossed over $189 million worldwide and “The X-Files: I Want to Believe”. Carter then launched a spin-off series of “The X-Files” titled “The Lone Gunman”. A director, producer and a screenwriter with an estimated net worth of $40 million, Chris Carter has been a nominee for several awards for his contributions to the entertainment industry, including Emmy Awards, Edgar Awards, British Academy Television Awards and Directors Guild of America Awards. Chris Carter is currently said to be writing and directing an upcoming movie titled “Fencewalker” that will feature Natalie Dormer and Katie Cassidy.

Chris Carter Quotes

  • You long for writers like Neil Gaiman. His vision is so personal and idiosyncratic, and unexpected.
  • I had been to Vancouver a few years prior to bringing The X-Files (1993) there … so, as a filmmaker, it wasn’t a discovery for me because I had friends who knew the area and had shot there before. …Vancouver really became my home away from home, and to this day I still own a house there.
  • The television business changed a lot from when I did The X-Files (1993) to when we did Harsh Realm (1999). Television took on the characteristics of the feature film industry, where, if the show didn’t open ‘big’ out-of-the-gate…it was canceled, immediately.
  • It takes crazy attention to detail if you want something to be good.
  • People thought the storyline and characters for The X-Files (1993) made it a ‘dark’ show, but I never saw it that way. I always thought Mulder and Scully were the light in dark places.
  • Fox canceling Harsh Realm (1999) wasn’t a surprise to me because it was a very expensive show…it was just disappointing the series didn’t have a chance to prove itself.
  • The day I swan around in expensive suits is the day I hope someone puts a bullet in my head.

Chris Carter Important Facts

  • Lives in Santa Barbara, California.
  • Under tremendous time crunch, Carter did an all-night audio mix session to finish The X-Files (1993) pilot, which was to be shown to Fox executives the following morning. That night, he ended up sleeping on a couch in the Fox Studios lobby.
  • Pitched The X-Files (1993) to Brandon Tartikoff at NBC, but Tartikoff turned it down.
  • Two of his attempts for crossovers with other television shows failed for the same reasons. The first attempt was to crossover The X-Files (1993) with CBS’s Picket Fences (1992), however, CBS feared losing ratings to the newer network. The second attempt was to crossover with the WB’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997), but Fox also feared losing ratings to the newer network. In both cases, each show’s executive producer was on board: David E. Kelley and Joss Whedon respectively.
  • His brother, W. Craig Carter, is a Full Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT.
  • Has considered titling his eventual and as-yet-unwritten autobiography “Fridays At Nine,” the timeslot for the shows he’s created, due to their mix of successes and failures.
  • He is a Godfather of Gillian Anderson and Clyde Klotz’s daughter Piper Maru.
