Carol Creighton Burnett Wiki Biography
American comedian, singer, actress and TV producer Carol Creighton Burnett was born on 26 April 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, and is still probably best known as the host of the long-running “The Carol Burnett Show” which aired on CBS in the 1960s and ‘70s, although she has made many other notable appearances on both TV and film, as well as in live shows.
So just how rich is Carol Burnett, as of early 2017? Authoritative sources estimate that Carol has a net worth as high as $25 million, accumulated during a career in the entertainment industry which now spans over six decades since her debut on TV in 1955.
Carol had a really difficult childhood with a dark background, as she was born to alcoholic parents, and was not the happiest child although actually raised by her grandmother M. E. White, and moving to an apartment near Hollywood. Her situation improved when she discovered her acting talent during her college years, although she couldn’t think she would ever seriously work as an actress, despite having had such a great dream since childhood. Carol matriculated from Holywood High School, and then began studying journalism at UCLA courtesy of a gift, but switched to acting as part of the writing program. She was then sponsored to move to New York, where after a year auditioning, Burnett made her debut on TV in 1955, appearing in “The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show”, only the beginning of Burnett’s bright career and net worth.
Carol had several more minor roles in shows before appearing in the famous “The Garry Moore Show” together with Durward Kirby and Garry Moore, definitely Carol’s break-through performance which also increased her net worth considerably, especially as she became a regular until 1962. Subsequently, she became known for her appearances in such movies as “Once Upon a Mattress”, “Pete ‘n’ Tillie”, “Get Bruce” “Annie” and “Post Grad” among many others.
However, none compared with “The Carol Burnett Show”, in which Carol starred together with Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner, which made her a household name in the US. The show ran from 1967 to 78, winning 23 Emmy Awards among mTin Conway, Harvey KormanTin Conway, Harvey Korman, any others, and maintaining its popularity with audiences because of the varied mixture of humor, satire and slapstick, so contributing significantly to Carol’s bank account. Concurrently, she was the first star to appear on “Sesame Street” in 1969, again ingratiating herself with the TV audience.
Her own show was hard to follow successfully, but Carol frequently guest-starred in TV series, including “All My Children”, “Mama’s Family” and “Mad About You”, as well as appearing on the Broadway stage in “Moon Over Buffalo” in the mid-90s, and “Putting it Together” in 2000.
Carol is still active in the entertainment industry – more recently in 2014 she participated in “The Colbert Report” created by Ben Karlin, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and Joe Antonetti, and has an annual recurring role in “Hawaii-Five 0”.
In her personal life, Carol has married three times, firstly to college boyfriend Don Saroyan from 1955 to ’62, then to Joe Hamilton – a TV producer – from 1963 to ’84, with whom she had three daughters. Since 2001 she has been married to musician Brian Miller, 23 years her junior; they continue to live in Los Angeles.

Carol Creighton Burnett Quotes
- The best advice that I could give is be kind.
- [on working with Tim Conway when he went off script] I often thought that I should have some investment in Depends, because nobody could be with Tim and keep a straight face.
- I can’t dance! I was fair at faking it all these years, but I am NOT and never was, a dancer.
- [on her protégé Vicki Lawrence] I adore Vicki, we adore each other!
- When you have dream, you’ve got to garb it and never let it go.
- God bless the theatre. And please let there be a way for it to thrive..forever.
- [on her friend Vicki Lawrence playing Mama] Each time we did it, [Vicki] knocked it out of the ballpark, It’s so funny. She started out as my kid sister and wound up as my mother!.
- [on discovering the potential of her Friend and protégé Vicki Lawrence] There was something about her that drew the audience to her, and that’s something you’re born with, She bore such a resemblance to me; that was obvious.
- I’m glad I was born when I was. My time was the golden age of variety. If I were starting out again now, maybe things would happen for me, but it certainly would not be on a variety show with 28 musicians, 12 dancers, two major guest stars, 50 costumes a week by Bob Mackie. The networks just wouldn’t spend the money today.
- [on never trying stand-up comedy] I can’t tell a joke to save my soul. It’s just not my thing, though I love to listen to jokes. I remember Ed Wynn, a famous comedian who started out in vaudeville, once said “Stand-up comedians say funny things. Sketch comedians say things funny.” Isn’t that a good distinction?
- I had the imprint as a child that if Mickey and Judy could put a show on in a barn and then it got to Broadway, well that’s just the way things are! Inside I always knew I would be okay.
- I was once asked to do my Tarzan yell at Bergdorf Goodman, and a guard burst in with a gun! Now I only do it under controlled circumstance.
- I think the hardest thing to do in the world, show-business-wise, is write comedy. We had a great staff of writers, and if we had a sketch we were rehearsing and it wasn’t working, we’d call the writers down and show them what we had come up with. And there were no egos. In 11 years, we never had a writer get angry because we made it a little bit more of our own and maybe a little improved. They would jump in and say, “Oh okay, how about this then, while you’re doing that?” We were all in the sandbox together.
- Having seen Harvey Korman as Danny Kaye’s second banana – this was like Carl Reiner to Sid Caesar and Art Carney to Jackie Gleason – I said, “We’ve got to get somebody like him.” And when Danny’s show went off the air, we said: “Duh. Why don’t we get him?” When I do the Q&As, I talk about Harvey and pay tribute to him. He approached everything from an acting standpoint, and having the comedy chops to go with it, that’s a jewel. When you play tennis, it’s important to play with a better player because it makes your game better. Well, Harvey made my game better. I miss him dreadfully. And Tim Conway, God bless him, is just a genius when it comes to improvising, coming up with stuff that we never rehearsed.
- Comedy is tragedy — plus time.
- [about her youth] Sometimes a guy would ask me to jitterbug, but nine times out of ten, they were not only a foot shorter than I was, but geeks to boot.

Decades later, when she was to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she was asked by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce where she would like it placed.
