Born Björn Rune Borg on the 6th June 1956. in Stockholm, Sweden, he is a retired professional tennis player, often considered one of the best players ever, with 11 Grand Slam titles and 64 singles titles overall. During the ‘70s he helped increase the popularity of the “white sport”, and set countless records that still stand.

In 1972 he joined Sweden’s Davis Cup team against Netherlands, and won his debut match by defeating Onny Parun in five sets. The following year was his breakthrough year, as he won his first French Open title and seven other singles titles, including in London, Boston and Adelaide. Björn subsequently dominated the tennis courts until the early ‘80s, winning five more French Open titles, in 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981, and added five Wimbledon titles, consecutively from 1976 to 1980. However, he wasn’t quite successful at other two Grand Slams, taking part only once at the Australian Open, while at the US Open he was a finalist four times, but failed to win the title losing to Jimmy Connors, and John McEnroe two times to each player. Björn started struggling with the early ‘80s, and in 1983 decided to retire at the age of 26. He tried to return in the early ‘90s, but without any major success.

When he retired, Björn owned a penthouse in Monte Carlo, a mansion on Long Island, and bought a small island off the Swedish coast. He had also started several business ventures, including a pro shop, and a fashion label, which became a success in his native country. His net worth was soaring, but in later years he had financial troubles, but luckily managed to avoid bankruptcy.

Thanks to his successful career, Björn received a number of recognitions, including being inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987, and he also holds the record of 41 consecutive match wins at the Wimbledon Open.
