Berry Gordy Wiki Biography

  • Berry Gordy Jr. is a prominent American entrepreneur, film and television maker, music executive, as well as a record producer, generally referred to as Berry Gordy.
  • Berry Gordy is probably best known in the music industry as the founder of a record label called Motown, which was originally located in Detroit, Michigan, of course.
  • In 1959, Gordy formed “Motown” and moved the company to Los Angeles in 1972.
  • Over the years, Gordy made “Motown” one of the most successful record labels at the time, mixing pop music with an intricate soul music style, a phenomenon is later known as the “Motown Sound.”
  • With such artists as Diana Ross and “The Supremes”, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, “The Jackson 5” and many others, “Motown” enjoyed mainstream success in the 1960s and 1970s.
  • “The “Motown” company also began to engage in the film industry after its relocation to Los Angeles and released films such as “Lady Sings the Blues,” in which Diana Ross played Billie Holiday, “Thank God It’s Friday,” starring Jeff Goldblum and Debra Winger, “The Last Dragon,” co-produced by Gordy, and with Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Ted Ross, “The Wiz.
  • Motown has grown over the years to include such major divisions as Motown Records, Tamla Records, Gordy Records, and Tamla-Motown Records, as well as various R&B, pop, jazz, rock, and other record labels.
  • Gordy agreed to sell the business to MCA and ‘Boston Projects’ in 1988.
  • For Gordy, it was a very lucrative offer, as he got 61 million dollars for it.
  • The net worth of Berry Gordy is reported to be $365 million according to estimates, probably accrued largely due to his association with “Motown.”
  • In 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, Berry Gordy was born.
  • In order to pursue a professional boxing career, Gordy left high school, but during the Korean War, he was drafted into the United States Army, which put a stop to his prospective career.
  • Gordy showed interest in music and songwriting on his return from Korea, which encouraged him to open his own music store called “3-D Record Mart.”
  • Unfortunately, Gordy was forced to close the store shortly after its opening, as it did not bring much profit.
  • With his entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the Pioneer Award granted to him by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Gordy’s contributions to music have been recognized.
