Bernard King was born on the 4th December 1956, in Brooklyn, New York City USA, and is a former professional basketball player in the NBA, who played as small forward during his career in the New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Washington Bullets. Bernard King grew up in Brooklyn where he went to the Fort Hamilton high school before moved south to study at the University of Tennessee. In 1977, the New Jersey Nets selected him with the 7th pick overall in the NBA Draft, and he immediately exploded in his rookie season setting the franchise’s record for most points scored in a season with 1,909. King earned his place in the NBA All-Rookie Team in 1978, averaging 24.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. His net worth was certainly improving.
King stayed for another season in New Jersey before moved to the Utah Jazz, but suffered a serious injury and missed most of the year, playing in only 19 games. In 1980, he played for the Golden State Warriors and won the NBA’s Comeback Player of the Year award after averaging 21.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. The following year, King made it to the All-Star game for the first time, and also got into the All-NBA Second Team after having a solid season with the Warriors.
King spent the next four years with the New York Knicks. and had two excellent seasons in 1983-84 and 1984-85. In 1983-84, King was invited to his second All-Star game and also made it to the All-NBA First Team for the first time. However, the 1984-85 was the best in his career; King became the NBA leading scorer with 32.9 points per game, and swiftly booked his place to the All-Star event as well to the All-NBA First Team for the second year in a row. Bernard stayed in New York for one more season, and then moved to the Washington Bullets.
King spent four seasons with the Bullets and was a key player of the team, averaging over 20 points per game in three of four seasons. In 1990-91, King averaged 28.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, more than enough to appear for the fourth and last time at the All-Star Weekend. He returned to where it had all started in New Jersey, but constant knee issues forced him to end his career after successful 16 years. Bernard King scored 19,655 points in 874 games, 22.5 on average, making him the 16th highest scorer in NBA history at the time.
After retirement, King took time off before starting to work as a broadcaster for the NBA TV network on a part-time basis. He also occasionally fills the role at MSG Network when Walt Frazier is away on holidays or unable to work.
