He’s been active in the music industry since 1974, and all of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.
How rich is Benmont Tench? As of late-2017, sources inform us of a net worth that is at $700,000, mostly earned through a successful career in music. He helped write numerous songs for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, as well as other prominent artists. As he continues his endeavors, it is expected that his wealth will also continue to increase.
At an early age, Benmont learned to play the piano, subsequently appearing at various recitals during this time. He then discovered The Beatles and decided to shift his focus from classical piano to rock ‘n’ roll. He met Tom Petty inside a music store when he was 11 years old, and soon the two would become members of the band called Sundowners in 1964, practising inside the family garage. Benmont attended Phillips Exeter Academy, and after matriculating went on to attend Tulane University, meantime supporting Petty with his other music endeavors during this time, hanging out with Petty’s band. Eventually, Benmont decided to leave school to fully pursue a music career.
Tom’s band – then called Mudcrutch – would eventually evolve to become Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. With the band, Tench’s net worth increased significantly, as he played the piano with them. More opportunities opened up for him, and he was a regularly featured session musician, recording with numerous notable artists, as well as writing many hit songs recorded by other artists such as “You Little Thief”, “Stay Forever” and “Unbreakable Heart”; some of the artists he has worked with include Feargal Sharkey, Rosanne Cash, Jessica Andrews and Lone Justice.
After the end of the run of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Benmont went on to focus on various musical projects. In 2008, he became a part of the supergroup called The Scrolls which would eventually be renamed as the Works Progress Administration (WPA), including Greg Leisz, Sean Watkins, Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher. They released a self-titled album one year later, with one song written by Benmont. He then made an appearance with The Watkins Family Hour, and later alongside Gillian Welch. He continued to tour with various acts well into the 2010s, including being a part of the national tour and debut album of The Watkins Family Hour, increasing his net worth even further. In 2014, Benmont released his solo album entitled “You Should Be So Lucky”, and one of his latest endeavors is playing a Fleetwood Mac tribute in 2016. He also reunited with Mudcrutch to record the album “Mudcrutch 2”, and the band went on to tour in the same year.
For his personal life, it is known that Tench married model Courtney Taylor in 1993, but they divorced after six years. Since 2015, he has been married to author.
