Born Anthony Robert McMillan on the 30th March 1950, in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire Scotland, he is an actor, comedian and author probably best known to the world for his role as Rubeus Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” franchise films. He has been an active member of the entertainment industry since 1979.
Have you ever wondered how rich Robbie Coltrane is, as of late 2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Robbi’s net worth is as high as $4 million, earned through his successful career in the entertainment industry as an actor.
Robbie is the son of Jean Ross and Ian Baxter McMillan, who served as a police surgeon, but was also a general practitioner. Robbie has an older sister Anne and younger sister Jane.
He went to Glenalmond College, an independent school located in Perthshire, and was nearly expelled because of some indecent behavior. Nevertheless, he matriculated and then attended the Glasgow School of Art; while there he was mocked by other students due to his accent which sounded like Prince Charles, and earned the nickname “Lord Fauntleroy”. He then enrolled at the Moray House College of Education. His career began in the late 1970s, as he assumed the moniker Robbie Coltrane as a tribiute to jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, and appeared in an episode of the TV comedy drama series “Play For Today” (1979). Soon he made cameo appearances in films “Death Watch” (1980), and “Flash Gordon” the same year, then started making a name for himself by appearing in the comedies “A Kick Up the Eighties” (1981), “The Comic Strip Presents” (1982), and “Alfresco” (1983-1984). In 1984 he appeared in the film “Chinese Boxes” with Will Patton and Gottfried John, then featured in “Revolution” (1985) starring Al Pacino and Donald Sutherland, and to the end of the 1980s, he had parts in “Absolute Beginners” (1986) with David Bowie, “Eat The Rich” (1987), “Bert Rigby, You`re A Fool” (1989), “Let It Ride” (1989), starring Richard Dreyfuss and “Henry V”, also in 1989. His net worth was rising steadily.
With the beginning of the 1990s, his name became more known in the acting world, and he got lead parts in films “Perfectly Normal” (1990), “The Pop Must Diet” (1991), “The Adventures Of Huck Finn” (1993). In 1993 he portrayed Dr. Eddie ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald in the TV series “Cracker” (1993-1996), which was later made into a film in 2006, in which Robbie repeated his role, and in 1995 he portrayed Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the Bond film “Golden Eye”, starring Pierce Brosnan and Izabella Scorupco. He repeated the role in “The World Is Not Enough” four years later, which increased his net worth by a large margin.
Until the 1990s ended, Robbie also featured in “Buddy” (1997), “Montana” (1998), starring Kyra Sedgwick, Stanley Tucci and Robin Tunney, and also “Alice In Wonderland” (1999),
His next big role was as Sergeant Peter Godley in the horror thriller “From Hell” (2001) starring Johnny Depp, and the same year he was selected for the role of Rubeus Hagrid in the adventure fantasy franchise films “Harry Potter”. He has played Hagrid in all eight parts of the film, which added a substantial amount to his net worth, but also popularized his name throughout the world, as he received positive critiques for his role, as well the appreciation of fans.
In 2004 he played Mr. Hyde in “Van Helsing”, and the same year he was cast as Matsui in “Ocean`s Twelve”. Four years later he appeared as Curator in the film “The Brothers Bloom”, starring Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo. In 2012 he portrayed Jaggers in the film “Great Expectations, and most recently he appeared as Paul Finchley in the TV Mini-Series “National Treasure” (2016), which also increased his net worth.
Thanks to his skills, Robbie has received several prestigious awards, including three BAFTA Awards in the category Best Actor for his work on the TV series “Cracker”. Furthermore, he received the Peter Sellers Award for Comedy for his contribution to the genre. Robbie has also received the Officer of the Order of the British Empire(OBE), for his contribution to drama.
Regarding his personal life, Robbie has been married to Rhona Gemmell since 1999; the couple has two children.

Anthony Robert McMillan Quotes
- [on Britain’s greatest sex offender, Sir Jimmy Savile] I never wanted to meet him. I always thought he was creepy. The big question is, what kind of culture was going on that he got away with it for as long as he did? With the way electronics and social media [are], hopefully it won’t happen again, that you could not get away with it these days. That’s what you’d hope.
- My dad? He died when I was 19, which is a bad time for your dad to die, because there’s an awful lot of things you have to resolve with your parents past your teens if you’ve been a difficult teenager.
- See, what you’re meant to do when you have a mid-life crisis is buy a fast car, aren’t you? Well, I’ve always had fast cars. It’s not that. It’s the fear that you’re past your best. It’s the fear that the stuff you’ve done in the past is your best work.
- That’s the trouble with anything which essentially has a lot of bits that are physically impossible: You’re left, stuck, in the studio. And that’s a shame. You’re making a movie. You don’t want it to stay put, you want it to be a movie – to move.
- When you are new to the business, you think if you give a really bad performance, that’s one they will print. You will be judged. You just have to be brave.
- I’ve got two young kids. I don’t know what the future holds.
- I’ve signed on for four movies, and I’ll do four. That’s easy. No complications there.
- The backgrounds in Lord of the Rings are all explained.
- What you do is get the right director and the right screenwriter and the right cast. It’s a fantastic job.
- Why is it trivia? People call it trivia because they know nothing and they are embarrassed about it.
- I knew it was going to be enormous because of the number of people who bought the books, but, to be honest, I never thought it would be bigger than Bond. Never in a million years.
- I mean, I’m obviously not one of those people who’s so beautiful women take their clothes off when I walk into the room. I didn’t become a star overnight.
- I’ve already felt that I want to direct. Being an executive producer is like the best job in the world because you make all these executive decisions and then you leave the money to other people. You don’t have to be on set and counting beans.
- It was quite instant that he wanted Harry’s approval. Did you notice that? And the children sort of rescued him this time. It’s a great turnabout. That’s what happens as your children get older. They do things for you, and it’s quite shocking when they do.
- It’s hell with that big beard and stuff. That’s the one bit I don’t like. Either you take out at lunch or you don’t eat. So I opted not to eat, ’cause having to put it on twice is horrific.
- The person who comes up to you and makes the most noise and is the most intrusive is invariably the person in the room who has no respect for you at all, and it’s really all about them.
- Is it just me, or is the world full of beautiful women?
- Believe me, my children have more stamina than a power station.
- I had a very bad time with acid. I did that classic thing of looking in the mirror by mistake and seeing the devil. But I took it several times, because you always think that next time you might have the wonderful time that everyone else is having.
- Ninety percent of people’s nightmares is standing in front of 1,000 people. Did you know that? And having to speak. You would have thought it would have been a madman tying you up and taking your eyes out.
- Crows are incredibly smart. They can be taught five things on the drop.
- I just get the same stuff as I did before, but the price tag is much higher.
- I love films where the world seems to be going a bit faster and everything’s a bit brighter and more in focus.
- I sometimes worry that all the beautiful things have been made.
- I think the shocking thing to discover is the owls are not stupid and very feral, very hard to train.
- Once you’ve been doing anything for twenty-five years people start to notice you. What was really nice about the OBE is that it’s the first award where I didn’t have to make a speech and I didn’t have to sit there waiting to see if I’d won – I knew I was going to get it.
- In real life, I’m 6′ 1″ – each way pretty well, north and south and east and west, unfortunately.
