Anna Wintour Wiki Biography
Anna Wintour was born on 3 November 1949, in Hampstead, London, England, and is a journalist as well as a magazine editor. To the public, Anna Wintour is perhaps best known as the editor-in-chief of the popular internationally recognized fashion magazine called “Vogue”.
So just how rich is Anna Wintour, as of late 2017? According to sources, Anna Wintour’s net worth is estimated to be over $40 million, most of which comes from her involvement with “Vogue” magazine, but all efforts in her career since the early ’70s have contributed.
Anna Wintour attended North London Collegiate School. Wintour’s interest in fashion was heightened by “Ready Steady Go!”, a television program hosted by Kathy McGowan, as well as various fashion magazines she received from her grandmother, who at the time lived in the United States. Wintour’s professional career started with “Harper’s & Queen”, a fashion magazine where she worked as an editorial assistant. However, due to many conflicts with Min Hogg, who was her competitor, Wintour decided to move to New York, where she began working as a fashion editor for a popular women’s fashion magazine known as “Harper’s Bazaar”. Wintour worked for “Harper’s Bazaar” for a period of nine months and then ventured on to be a fashion editor for an adult women’s magazine “Viva”, which was her first position that earned her a reputation as a strict boss. Eventually, Wintour secured a position in “Vogue” magazine, for which she is most notable. Prior to becoming an editor-in-chief on “Vogue”, Anna Wintour also worked for a weekly magazine called “New York”, which dealt with culture, fashion and politics.
Wintour became the editor-in-chief of “Vogue” in 1988 and has held the position since then. When Wintour took over the magazine, she was determined to raise its appeal to younger readers, and become more accessible, yet still maintain a sense of sophistication and class. It was with Wintour’s contributions to the magazine that “Vogue” became one of the most widely read fashion magazines in the industry. It is estimated that currently “Vogue’s” circulation reaches over 11.3 million readers, while with an eye on the future, the website version of the magazine attracts more than 1.6 million readers per month, .
Over the years, “Vogue” has grown to be a truly influential magazine, mostly due to Wintour’s perceptive and insightful approach towards fashion and lifestyle. “Vogue” inspired the publication of several books, including “Nostalgia in Vogue” and “From the Vogue Closet”, as well as the release of a documentary film directed by R. J. Cutler entitled “The September Issue”, which focused on Wintour’s life as the editor-in-chief during the production of the 2007 September issue of the “Vogue” magazine.
In addition to being an important figure in the development of the “Vogue” magazine, Anna Wintour is also an artistic director for a mass media company known as “Conde Nast”, which is responsible for printing “Vogue” among many other magazines. Currently, Wintour is considered to be one of the most powerful and influential people in the fashion industry.
In her personal life, Anna Wintour was married to David Schaffer from 1984 to ’99, and they have a son and a daughter. Her separation was rumoured to have been caused by an affair with Shelby Bryan, a relationship which has apparently been continued. Anna continues to live in New York City.
Wintour is a noted philanthropist, a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, reputed to have raised $50 million for the Costume Institute. She launched the CFDA/Vogue Fund to encourage, support and mentor fashion designers. She also supports AIDS charities, since 1990 organising various high-profile benefits which have raised over $10 million.
