Angela Martinez was born on January 9, 1971 in Brooklyn, New York, United States of America. She is a former rapper, radio personality and actress. She was the voice of the popular radio show “Afternoon Drive” on Hot97 radio station. Angie is also known as the Voice of New York. She is a nominee of BET Award (2002) and Grammy Award (1998). Martinez has been active in the entertainment industry since 1996.

Angie Martinez pursued the career of a radio host at an early age. Angie was just 16 years old when she started answering hot lines at the radio station Hot97. While working there she collaborated with well known DJ Flunkmaster Flex. Afterwards, she worked with DJ Enuff and conducted interviews from celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Kanye West and others. It was a really popular radio show according to the ratings. In 2014, she changed her workplace to New York radio station WWPR-FM and became recognised as the voice of New York.

These were in the feature films “Brown Sugar” (2002) directed by Rick Famuyiwa, “Paper Soldiers” (2002) directed David V. Daniel, Damon Dash and “Blood Is Thicker Than Water” (2009) directed by Martyn Friend.
Martinez debuted as a musician in 1996, however only released her first single “Mi Amor” featuring Jay-Z several years later in 2000. During her whole career as a rapper, she has released five singles and two studio albums. The most successful of all singles was “If I Could Go” featuring Lil’ Mo & Sacario which reached 11th place on the Rap chart in the United States of America. Her studio albums were more successful as “Up Close and Personal” (2001) has peaked in 7th position and “Animal House” at 6th on the R&B chart in the United States of America. In 1998, Martinez was nominated for the Grammy Award for the Best Rap Performance by Due or Group for the song “Not Tonight”. What is more, she was nominated for BET Award as the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist in 2002. Martinez was invited to be the judge of “American Idol” in 2002 but refused after several auditions as she felt hugely the discomfort while judging and letting down the participants. She retired from the recording in 2003 as she wanted to focus on other projects.
She participated in the New York City Marathon 2014 this way helping to raise funds for CC Sabathia’s charity.
In 2003, Angie gave birth to a boy Niko Ruffin, whose father is a rapper, songwriter and record producer Nokio the N-Tity, the leader of singing band Dru Hill.
