Andy Serkis Wiki Biography

Andrew Clement “Andy” Serkis was born on 20 April 1964, in Ruislip, Middlesex, England, and is an actor, voice actor, director, producer and author with British and Armenian ancestry. He is best known for advancing capture motion technology and portraying roles like Gollum from the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, Caesar from the “Planet of the Apes” franchise and Kong from “King Kong”.

How rich is Andy Serkis? Sources inform that his net worth is at $28 million as of early 2016, most of his wealth coming from his extensive career in acting, being involved in theatre, television as well as film over a period of well over 25 years. He’s gained a lot of ground from popularizing capture motion and is one of the forerunners of this technology in terms of film. He’s also authored a book, and owns a production company.

During his childhood, Andy travelled a lot because of the requirements of his father’s medical work in the Middle East. Andy developed a love for design, painting and visuals which helped him decide on studying visual arts while at Lancaster University. During this time he joined Nuffield Studio and started helping with visuals and stage design. He was eventually asked to portray the lead role for the play “Gotcha”. After this role, he fell in love with acting and decided to change majors and pursue that kind of career. He joined the Duke’s Playhouse to earn himself an Equity card, and then spent around a year and a half playing in various productions, including Shakespeare plays, Brecht plays and even modern playwright works. These were a good basis to his net worth.

Andy subsequently found opportunity doing small roles on television. He appeared in “The Darling Buds of May”, “Loop” and “Einstein and Eddington” where he played alongside David Tennant. After a few films and earning acclaim, Andy’s big breakthrough would come in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, playing the role of Smeagol/Gollum which many believe to have been a performance worthy of an Oscar nomination. This was one of the first times CGI-assisted acting was used in a major film, and the intricacies of doing the character and animation saw Serkis spend a lot of time in New Zealand for production. After the successful trilogy, Andy would find work playing Kong in the 2005 film “King Kong”, as well as Caesar for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. Doing a number of other films, he then reprised the role of Gollum in the trilogy prequel to “Lord of the Rings” entitled “The Hobbit”. In recent films, he’s portrayed as Supreme Leader Snoke in “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens”. All have aided the rise of his net worth.

Andy Serkis’ dedication to acting and motion capture has made him the consultant, producer, and direct contributor to multiple movies involving CGI. He founded Imaginarium Studios and will release the movie “Jungle Book: Origins” as his directorial debut.

Not much is known about Andy’s personal life as compared to his acting resume. He has been married to actress Lorraine Ashbourne since 2002: they have three children and reside in Crouch End, North London.

Andy Serkis Quotes

  • [ on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)] Trying to get back into the head of “Gollum”, it felt like kinda doing an impersonation if a character I had played. It was weird ’cause it was like having to re-own it again.
  • [on learning at ‘ape school’ how to walk and move like a simian, playing Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)] When you are watching yourself as an actor who has played a computer-generated role [King Kong], obviously you are looking to see if your performance has fully manifested itself on the screen, and if it contains all the original intention that was put there. And what I’ve seen,so far, has delighted me, because I know Rupert [Wyatt] has been devoted to try and push the emotional core of all the performances right through the post-production phase.
  • I’ve always been really in touch with my primal instincts. In my profession you have to be. You have to be open to going where your emotions take you. Acting is a sort of pressure cooker that allows the fizz to come out the top. God knows what I’d be like if I didn’t have that. Even more animal, perhaps.
  • I do feel incredibly liberated when I’m inside another’s skin, basically, and so method does afford you that, hugely.
  • “We didn’t want to anthropomorphize him to the point where we were explaining every single little gesture. Gorillas, both in captivity and the wild, have an enigmatic quality – a sense of disconnect, of otherness” – on his title character in King Kong (2005).
  • [on playing Gollum in Lord of the Rings:] “Everyone has their own interpretation of what he is, what he looks like and how he sounds. So it was up to me to just trust my own instincts.”

Andy Serkis Important Facts

  • His father was a gynaecologist who opened a hospital in Baghdad and was briefly imprisoned under Saddam Hussein’s regime.
  • Has thrice co-starred with Jamie Bell: Deathwatch (2002), King Kong (2005) and The Adventures of Tintin (2011).
  • Has twice played computer-generated apes: in “King Kong” (as the giant title character) and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (as Caesar, the chimpanzee who leads the rebellion).
  • Completing and Directing Motion Capture for Playstation 3’s game ‘Heavenly Sword’ at Weta Digital in Wellington, New Zealand. Plays the Character of ‘King’ in the game.
  • His performance as Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is ranked #10 on Premiere Magazine’s 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time.
  • Has three sisters and a brother.
  • Children: Sonny, Ruby and Louis George (born 19th June 2004).
  • Uses his “Gollum” voice on his children, for fun and/or when they misbehave.
  • His family name, Serkis, is of Armenian descent like Mikhail Vartanov’s and Sergei Parajanov’s but originally would have been Sarkisian, Vartaniantz and Parajanian (respectively)
  • His last day of filming on the Lord of the Rings trilogy was only a few weeks before the theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). On the carpet of Peter Jackson’s living room, they filmed the facial reaction of Smeagol/Gollum when he realizes Frodo intends to destroy the ring. The resulting video was e-mailed to Weta Digital so the animators could replicate the shot with the CGI character.
  • Based the voice of Gollum on the sounds his cats made while coughing up furballs.
  • September 2004 – Attended the Armaggeddon Pulp Culture Expo Convention in Wellington, New Zealand as a Lord of the Rings guest
  • Although he was critically acclaimed for the performances, he was ruled ineligible for Best Supporting Actor nominations at the 2003, 2004 and 2012 Academy Awards because his characters Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) and Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) were computer generated.
  • Owns one of two prop rings used in “Lord of the Rings.” The other went to Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins.
  • Is a vegetarian.
  • He went to St Benedict’s School, London, UK.
  • Was required to don a wetsuit and flail around in literally freezing water during re-shoots for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002).
  • Has three children, two sons and a daughter.
  • His mother, Lylie (Weech), is British, and taught handicapped children. His father, Clement Serkis, a doctor, was born in Iraq, of Armenian descent.
