Alan Morton Dershowitz was born on the 1st September 1938, in Brooklyn, New York City USA, and is a lawyer, jurist and author aa well, perhaps best known to the world for representing Claus von Bülow, and being the appellate adviser for the defense in the case of O.J. Simpson in 1995, among other achievements.

Have you ever wondered how rich Alan Dershkowitz is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Alan`s net worth is as high as $25 million, earned through his successful career. Apart from working as a lawyer, Alan has also served as Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School.

Born to an Orthodox Jewish couple, Alan had a strong sense of justice from an early age, and fought on the underdog`s side. He grew up in Borough Park, and went to Yeshiva University High School, where his teachers told him that for a career he should choose something that required a big mouth and no brains, since he was a rebel at the time. However, after matriculation Alan enrolled at Brooklyn College, and graduated with an A.B in Political Science in 1959. After that, he enrolled at Yale Law School, and during his time there served as editor-in-chief for the Yale Law Journal. He graduated first in the class, receiving the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1962.

He then passed his bar exam, and soon joined David L. Bazelon, the chief judge of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, as a clerk. In 1963 and 1964 he was law clerk for the Supreme Court Associate Justice Arthur Goldberg, before his next step to Harvard Law School as an assistant professor, and just three years later he became a full professor, at just 28 years old the youngest professor of law in the history of Harvard Law School. (In 1993 he was appointed Felix Frankfurter professor of law, and served in that position until 2013, when he retired.)

His first major case was in 1976, when he worked for Harry Reems, who was convicted of distributing obscenity because of scenes in the pornographic film “Deep Throat”. After that he took over Claus von Bülow’s case; Claus was charged with the attempted murder of his wife Sunny, and Alan managed to overthrow the conviction and free Claus of charges.

In 1995 he was the appellate adviser to Simpson’s defense team, and in 2006 he represented billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, when he was facing charges of soliciting sex from minors.

Other than that, he has also represented various high profile clients, including Mike Tyson, Jim Baker, and Patty Hearst among others.

A strong Arab-Israeli conflict commentator, and a fighter for the rights of his people, Alan has supported numerous organizations that focus on improving rights for Jewish people, including the Soviet Jewry Defense Project, among others.

Alan has also authored several books, which have improved his wealth too; his first book was released in 1982, entitled “The Best Defense”, and he then wrote the book about the Claus von Bülow case, “Reversal of Fortune: Inside the von Bülow Case” in 1985. He wrote the book about O.J. Simpson`s trial too, entitled “Reasonable Doubts: The Criminal Justice System and the O.J. Simpson Case”, published in 1996. Some other popular titles include “Supreme Injustice: How the High Court Hijacked Election 2000” published in 2001; then “The Case for Israel” in 2003; in 2005 he published “The Case for Peace: How the Arab-Israeli Conflict Can be Resolved”; and most recently “Abraham: The World’s First (But Certainly Not Last) Jewish Lawyer” in 2015, among others.

Thanks to his work, Alan has received numerous prestigious awards and honors, including being named a Guggenheim Fellow in 1979, and four years later he receiving the William O. Douglas First Amendment Award by the Anti-Defamation League, for his devotion to civil rights. Furthermore, he was given the Soviet Jewry Freedom Award in 2007 by the Russian Community Foundation, among many other awards and recognitions.

Regarding his personal life, Alan has been married to Carolyn Cohen since 1986; the couple has one child together. Previously, he was married to Susan Barlach from 1959 until 1975; the couple had two children, one of whom is producer Elon Dershowitz.

Alan Dershowitz Quotes

  • [Referring to a police officers possibly conspiring against OJ Simpson in his murder case] Isn’t it clear that the police officers did in fact plan to obstruct justice? When five police officers, four of which are detectives and one supervisor, all swore under oath that they did not suspect OJ Simpson when they went to search his house.
