Alexander James McLean was born on 9 January 1978, in West Palm Beach, Florida USA, of German and Cuban(mother) and Scottish, Irish and English(father) descent, and as A. J. McLean, is an actor, songwriter, musician, as well as a dancer, but probably best known as a member of the famous boy band The Backstreet Boys.

McLean’s parents divorced when he was just two years old, and he was raised by his mother and grandmother. He found refuge from a somewhat troubled childhood in acting, and had his first role at the age of eight when he portrayed one of the characters in a horror film entitled “Truth or Dare”.
