Edward Fitzgerald Burns was born on the 29th January 1968, in Woodside, Queens County, New York State USA, of part-Irish descent. He is an actor, director, screenwriter and film producer, perhaps best known for starring in films such as “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), “A Sound of Thunder” (2005), “One Missed Call” (2008), and “Friends with Kids” (2012). Also, he is known for directing films including “The Brothers McMullen” (1995), “Sidewalks of New York” (2001), and “The Fitzgerald Family Christmas” (2012). Edward Burns has been active in the entertainment industry since 1995.

How much is the net worth of Edward Burns? It has been reported by authoritative sources that the outright size of his wealth is as much as $18 million, as of the data given in mid-2016.

To begin with, he was born and raised in a Catholic household. His childhood was spent in various schools located in New York, where his father worked as a sergeant in the police for 25 years. After matriculating from Chaminade High School and then graduating with a degree in English literature from Hunter College, he began to work. In his spare time he wrote scripts and prepared himself to debut as a director, actor and film producer.

With the help of the family Burns realized his dream, releasing the film “The Brothers McMullen” (1995) which he produced, directed and starred in. The story about three brothers and their love life was a great success, and the film was the hit of the biggest independent film festival – Sundance Film Festival where Burns took the main Grand Jury Prize. Later, the picture was also awarded an Independent Spirit Award, Producers Guild of America Award and Deauville American Film Festival Award. Rewards and positive feedback spurred him on, and led to the further releases. In 1996, Burns completed his next picture, the comedy “She’s the One” nominated for the Deauville American Film Festival Grand Prix Prize, with Burns again serving as director, producer, screenwriter, and actor as he played the role of the stockbroker Francis, and similarly in the following movies “No Looking Back” (1998) and “Sidewalks of New York” (2000). In 1998, he played for the first time in a Hollywood blockbuster, Steven Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan”, in which he portrayed Richard Reiben. Together with the cast Burns was awarded Online Film Critics Society Award for the Best Ensemble Cast Performance. Later, he directed and starred in the films “Purple Violets” (2007) and “Nice Guy Johnny” (2010) which were also nominated; the latter also won Boston Film Festival Prize for the Best Directing. His net worth has risen steadily.

Since 2015, Edward has been directing, writing and starring in the police drama television series “Public Morals” aired on TNT channel. Overall, Burns has starred in more than 30 films as well as directing 12 feature films.

Finally, in the personal life of the director and actor, he was in a relationship with Heather Graham from 1998 to 1999. In 2003 he married model Christy Turlington, and they have a daughter Grace (born in 2003) and a son Finn (born in 2006).

Edward Fitzgerald Burns Quotes

  • [on performing with Rachel Nichols] The first thing we shot was our bedroom scene. It was like, ‘Hey, how are you? Let’s get naked.’ It was good to get that out of the way early in the shoot.
  • [on working with director Rob Cohen on ‘Alex Cross’] Rob loves to shoot action and that’s the stuff I don’t do. But you never know when you’re going to need it, so I was happy we got along, because I was looking over his shoulder a lot.
  • [on Saving Private Ryan (1998)] When your first experience of acting for somebody else is Steven Spielberg, you learn to observe. I certainly knew I wasn’t going to be offering any advice. I just sat back and watched him work.
  • You make a movie for 9k for the freedom it allows you.
  • I went hat in hand to the money guys for years. Just couldn’t do it anymore. Decided to write smaller stories and never looked back.
  • Newlyweds shooting budget: 5k for actors, 2k insurance, 2k food and drink. 9k in the can. We only shot 12 days. That’s how to make an independent film.
  • If these new revenue streams weren’t being uncovered, I know I would be out of business.
  • [on why he makes films about Irish-Americans] “I feel Irish-Americans are the forgotten minority group. Nobody else is making films about them. You have Woody Allen and Paul Mazursky making films about Jewish-Americans, you have Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola making films about Italian-Americans and you have Spike Lee and John Singleton making films about African-Americans. Who is making films about Irish-Americans?”.
  • (On his fourth writing/directing effort, the Sidewalks of New York (2001)): “I hope people watch this movie and still see New York as the greatest city in the world. I certainly do”.
  • I suffer from Irish-Catholic guilt. Guilt is a good reality check. It keeps that ‘do what makes you happy’ thing in check.
