Engelbert Humperdinck Wiki Biography
Born Arnold George Dorsey on the 2th May 1936 in Madras, British India, under his stage name Engelbert Humperdinck he is a pop singer, best known to the world for his songs “Release Me”, and “The Last Waltz” in the same year, both singles topping the chart and selling more than one million copies, becoming the first singer to achieve such thing. His career has been active since 1956.
Have you ever wondered how rich Engelbert Humperdinck is, as of mid- 2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Engelbert Humperdinck’s net worth is as high as $150 million, earned through his successful musical career.
Engelbert is native of British India, now Chennai, India, the son of British Army NCO Mervyn Dorsey and his wife Olive. His parents had nine more children beside him, and moved to Leicester, England, when Engelbert was 10 years old. Soon he became interested in music, and started playing the saxophone. From the late 1940s to the middle 1950s he was a well-known saxophonist in nightclubs, but he wasn`t singing until he was 17 years old, when a group of friends signed him up for a talent contest. He impersonated Jerry Lewis and earned the nickname Gerry Dorsey, and used that name as a performer for almost a decade.
Unfortunately, his musical career was put on hold because of national service in the British Army Royal Corps of Signals in the mid-1950s, but after discharge he returned to nightclubs, and also recorded his first single “I`ll Never Fall In Love Again” in 1958, released through Decca Records. Although his song wasn`t very popular, he didn`t quit, and he continued to perform in nightclubs.
He built a name for himself in the nightclubs, but after teaming with his friend Gordon Mills who was Tom Jones` manager, changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck, and success was just waiting for him. His songs “Release Me” (1967), and “The Last Waltz” (1967) topped the UK charts, and sold more than a million copies, which increased his net worth, and encouraged him to continue in the same way. Until the end of the 1960s, he had successful singles such as “”There Goes My Everything” (1967), “Am I That Easy To Forget” (1967), “Winter World Of Love” (1969), among others, all of which added to his net worth.
From then, his fame began to decline, although he had a few ups with songs “When There’s No You” in 1971, “After The Lovin” (1976), and This Moment In Time” (1978), which reached No. 1 in popular charts. Although he remains active to the present day, and has released more than 60 studio albums, his recordings haven`t achieved the success of those released in the late 1960s and 1970s. His latest album was released in 2014, entitled “Engelbert Calling”, and featured musicians such as Elton John, Charles Aznavour, Olivia Newton-John, Kenny Rogers and many others.
Apart from musical career, Englebert has also tried himself in the real estate industry; through the years he has owned several luxurious hotels, including La Posada de Englebert in La Paz, Mexico, among other residences. In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate of music from the University of Leicester, and three years later he was given Honorary Freedom of Leicester with other celebrities, including writer Sue Townsend and footballer Alan Birchenall. Furthermore, in 2010 he was honored with a plaque on the Leicester Walk of Fame.
Regarding his personal life, Engelbert has been married to Patricia Healey since 1964; the couple has four children. He is a devout Christian, and tries to visit the cathedral in every city he visits on his numerous musical tours.
