He started working for WCCO while at the University, at their satellite sister station KCMT, and then in 1982 joined WSVN in Miami, plus spending a brief time in Houston working for KHOU, before returning to WSVN. He remained at the station until 2001, when he was hired by MSNBC working for the next two years before returning to Miami, joining WTVJ and WBZL stations until 2004, when he joined CNN. His net worth was already well set.

He was interviewed by Pete Dominick on Sirius XM radio, and Rick said that Jon Stewart was a bigot and that everyone at CNN was similar to Stewart.
Following his dismissal from CNN, Rick made public apologies, and continued with his career by joining FOX News in 2012, and has worked for the station as a contributor, while also showcasing his skills as a writer om Fox News Latino, and as a news contributor for MundoFox, which has also added to his net worth.
