Born in East Dulwich, South London, Perkins is the daughter of Bert Perkins, who worked as a local car dealer, and Ann Perkins, who was a secretary, she has two younger siblings. She attended Croham Hurst School for girls and later on studied English at New Hall, University of Cambridge. During her time at Cambridge, she met fellow comic Mel Giedroyc; the two became great friends and created the duo “Mel and Sue.” They started their career in the ‘90s doing gigs and shows, and their breakthrough came when they appeared in an episode of the television series “French & Saunders.”

Perkins together with Giedroyc would later have their own show entitled “Light Lunch”, wherein they invited a celebrity guest to cook for them and a guest celebrity. The show became a hit and lasted a couple of years, and was even renamed “Late Lunch.” The early years of their career helped establish them as comedians and also increased their net worth.
