Tim Rice Wiki Biography
Timothy Miles Bindon Rice was born on 10 November 1944, in Shardeloes, Buckinghamshire, England to Hugh and Joan. He is best known as a lyricist and author, and for his collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber, overall a frequently awarded member of the entertainment industry.
So just how rich is Tim Rice as of late 2017? Authoritative sources report that Rice’s net worth is as high as $250 million, accumulated from his over five decades long career in the music industry, and writing. His assets include an estate in Dundonnell valued at £2 million and bought in 1998.
Tim attended Aldwickbury School and after that St Albans School. He studied at Lancing College as well and left it with high grades in French and History. Rice went on to work as an articled clerk in London, having decided not to pursue a college education, however, he ended up enrolling into the Sorbonne, in Paris. Having finished his first year there, he joined EMI Records in 1966 as a management trainee, but eventually became an assistant producer. In 1968, Tim collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber and the duo wrote ‘’Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’’, a musical based on a Bible story from ‘’Book of Genesis’’, which was nominated for the Best Musical and Best Original Score among others. Webber and Rice established a successful partnership and worked on several other projects, including ‘’ Jesus Christ Superstar’’ and ‘’Evita’’ in 1970 and 1978 respectively. In 1981, he collaborated with Rick Wakeman and made albums ‘’1984’’ and ‘’Cost of Living’’. He went on to work with ABBA for the creation of a musical entitled ‘’Chess’’, and subsequently worked with Alan Menken and Elton John among other musicians.
Menken and Rice wrote lyrics for ‘’Aladdin’’ in 1992. Their efforts were praised by the media and the soundtrack they created was called ‘’consistently good, rivaling the best of Disney’s other animated musicals from the ’90s’’. The team ended up winning a Golden Globe, Grammy and an Academy Award for ‘’The Whole New World’’. Tim’s net worth was rising substantially.
Two years later, Tim worked on the soundtrack for ‘’The Lion King’’ alongside Hans Zimmer. ‘’Can You Feel the Love Tonight’’, a song from the movie’s soundtrack received a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Then Rice won his third Academy Award in 1996 when he teamed up with Andrew Lloyd Webber for the movie adaptation of ‘’Evita’’, followed by writing the lyrics for ‘’ The Nutcracker: The Untold Story’’, a 2010 3D Christmas musical fantasy. In 2011, he worked with Webber once again, writing the lyrics for ‘’The Wizard of Oz’’. However, the partnership ended with Tim stating how they became irrelevant as a team.
In 2014, he made an appearance on ‘’ The Life of Rock with Brian Pern’’, a mockumentary mini television series. As of the most recent past, Rice wrote ‘’ One Night in Bangkok’’ for the TV series ‘’Scream Queens’’, and Tim’s lyrics were used for the 2017 movie adaptation of ‘’Beauty and the Beast’’. He wrote ‘’Aria’’ and ‘’ How Does a Moment Last Forever’’, among others songs, and in the same year, the audience could hear ‘’Any Dream Will Do’’ and ‘’Go Go Go Joseph’’ on ‘’ Good Morning Britain’’.
He has appeared in several documentaries including ‘’ The David Essex Story’’.
In his personal life, Rice married Jane McIntosh on 19 August 1974, and the couple still remains together after several critical periods in their marriage. They have two children. Rice was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994.

Tim Rice Quotes
- It doesn’t really matter whether or not you consider Elton John a great rock artist, which he is. He is an expert tunesmith. He writes beautiful melodies.
- I don’t think I realized how big a name The Lion King (1994) is. It is a huge name. It’s just one of those things, like ‘My Fair Lady’, that everybody’s heard of.
- [on Tony Christie] Tony has a timeless voice. If he has a song that tells a story, there’s no one better really.
- I think any song, to become a standard, i.e. a song that will be sung by lots of different people in different styles, I think you’ve got to have a good lyric as well as a great tune.
- We are chronically short of original musicals, and if there are original musicals, great ones like Matilda or Billy Elliot, they’re often written by people like Sir Elton who’ve been around for quite a while, and what we need is new, young composers.
- Nowadays, I think most composers, if it’s a team, if it’s A and B, one doing music, one doing lyrics, it would tend to be the music would come first, and with nearly everybody I’ve worked with that’s been the case. The one great exception is Elton, who will only write a tune if he’s got a lyric, so all those wonderful hits he’s written with Bernie Taupin, they all came from Bernie first.
- [on Elton John] As you can tell by looking at his great oeuvre with Bernie, his songs cover a wide range of styles, from hard rock to beautiful ballads, a bit of country influence, blues influence, so he’s able to take a lyric and do lots of different things with it.
