Phil Lesh was born to Frank and Barbara Chapman Lesh, growing up in a musical environment, and under its influence he learned to play the violin initially. He became a member of the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra in Berkeley, where he played classical music. He attended Berkeley High School, and when he was 14 years old, he switched to trumpet and showed an interests in jazz music. After matriculation, he enrolled at the University of California, but he quit and moved to Oakland, to enroll in Luciano Berio’s music class at Mills College. There he befriended Tom Constanten who later became the keyboard player of the Grateful Dead. During his college days, Phil worked as a recording engineer at the KFPA, where he met Jerry Garcia whom Phil later joined in Warlocks, which would eventually lead to creating The Grateful Dead with Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and Ron McKernan. The band`s line up changed often, but that didn`t stopped them from playing for 30 years, until 1995. During that period, the band released 13 studio albums, some of which reached platinum and gold certification, such as “Aoxomoxoa” (1969), “Workingsman`s Dead” (1970), “American Beauty” (1970) – which is the one of the band`s greatest albums, reaching double platinum – “In The Dark” (1987), and the last studio album “Without A Net” (1990). During the 30 years period, this was the main source of Phil`s net worth.
After the band ceased to exist, Phil played with several bands such as The Other Ones, Phil Lesh And Friends, and most recently Furthur, which also contained the former Grateful Dead member Bob Weir, however, the band disbanded as Lesh had serious health problems.
