Gavin Newsom Wiki Biography

Gavin Christopher Newsom is a businessman, television personality and politician, born on 10th October 1967 in San Francisco, California USA, of part-Irish and Scottish decent. He is currently serving as the 49th Lieutenant Governor of California, having formerly been Mayor of San Francisco, but is also well-known from his prior hosting of the TV show named after him, and his guest appearances in “Real Time with Bill Maher”.

Have you ever wondered how rich Gavin Newsom is? According to sources, it has been estimated that Newsom’s overall net worth is $10 million, accumulated principally thanks to his successful career as a politician. However, his other media appearances have significantly added to his net worth too. Since he is still an active businessman, his net worth continues to grow.

Newsom spent most of his childhood in Marin County with his mother and sister after his parents’ divorce. Gavin went to kindergarten and first grade at a French-American bilingual school in San Francisco, but had to change schools due to severe dyslexia, which still affects him. He attended Redwood High School where he played basketball and baseball, appearing on the “Marin Independent Journal” cover due to his talent. Upon matriculation, he enrolled at Santa Clara University on a partial baseball scholarship, later graduating with a BSc in political science.

Newsom entered the world of business in May 1991, when he and his investors formed Plump Jack Associates L.P., and later founded the Plump Jack Winery, with financial assistance from family friend Gordon Getty. This business grew into a company of more than 700 employees, and led to Gavin opening several more businesses during the next ten years, including Plump Jack Squaw Valley Inn, the Napa Valley winery, the Balboa Café Bar and Grill, Plump Jack Sport retail clothing, and many others. Thanks to this, Gavin’s net worth increased rapidly, reaching the sum of $7 million by 2002.

When it comes to his first political experience, that happened in 1995 when he volunteered for Willie Brown’s campaign for mayor, which led to Brown appointing Newsom to the Parking and Traffic Commission the following year. Gavin was elected president of the commission some time later, and the following year he was appointed to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, once again by Willie Brown. However, he gained real public attention for advocating reform of San Francisco’s Municipal Railway (Muni) in 1999; as one of the supervisors, he required Muni to develop detailed customer service plans. He also supported serving alcohol at restaurant’s outdoor tables, stiffer penalties for inattentive landlords, and banning tobacco advertisements in the streets.

In 2003, Newsom ran for mayor in the San Francisco election as a business-friendly centrist Democrat and a moderate. He won the run-off race and was sworn in as mayor in January 2004, a position he kept for the next six years. During his mayoralty, Gavin provided San Francisco residents with universal healthcare, joined UNITE HERE union members and boycotted hotels until they agreed with their workers, requested the abolition of the law which discriminated against certain dog breeds in California, and initiated the marriage license for same-sex couples. He received the Leadership for Healthy Communities Award in 2009.

In April 2009, Newsom ran for governor of California but dropped out, however, in 2010 he ran for lieutenant governor and won the election in November that year, taking over the position in January 2011.

The following year, Gavin debuted on Current TV as the host of “The Gavin Newsom Show”, in which he criticized California’s state capital, Sacramento. He released his first book “Citizenville: How to Take the Town Square Digital and Reinvent Government” in February 2013, and now Newsom has announced his campaign as the next Governor of California in the 2018 elections.

When it comes to his private life, Gavin was married to former prosecutor and legal commentator, Kimberly Guilfoyle from 2001 until January 2005, when they jointly filed for divorce due to struggles in balancing their careers and marriage. Newsom has been married to actress Jennifer Siebel since July 2008, and the couple have four children.

Gavin Newsom Quotes

  • I want President Obama to succeed. But, I am very upset by what he’s not done in terms of rights of gays and lesbians. I understand it tactically in a campaign, but at this point, I don’t know.
  • There is some belief that Obama actually doesn’t believe in same-sex marriage. But it’s fundamentally inexcusable for a member of the Democratic Party to stand on the principle that separate is now equal, but only on the basis of sexual orientation. We’ve always fought for the rights of minorities and against the whims of majorities.
