Ray grew up on a large farm, and he started learning the drums at a young age, largely self-taught, and later would participate in high school concerts and marching bands. After matriculating in 1988, he then moved to Hollywood, California to attend the Musicians Institute, from which he graduated with a degree from the Percussion Institute of Technology in 1989. In 2004, he worked on a drum instructional DVD released by Hal Leonard Publishing Co.
In 2006, Luzier played with Toshi Hiketa and Billy Sheehan, and was then invited to join the Army of Anyone, which consisted of members from Stone Temple Pilots. The following year, after Korn’s original drummer David Silveria left, Luzier was invited to audition, and having learned 30 songs from Korn despite the requirement of only learning five, he was immediately invited to join the band. In 2008, he made his first performance with Korn in Dublin, Ireland, and would continue touring with them throughout the year, being involved in recording their ninth studio album with Luzier now credited as a full time member of the band.
Aside from playing with Korn, Ray also performed with Stone Temple Pilots for a couple of shows during their reunion tour, filling-in for Eric Kretz who was out for a few dates due to the death of his father.
