Ozzy Osbourne Wiki Biography

John Michael Osbourne was born on 3 December 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, England, and is  widely known as a songwriter, singer and television personality, considered to be one of the developers of heavy metal music, and being called the ‘Godfather of Heavy Metal’. He initially came to notice playing with the band Black Sabbath, but from the early ’80s continually moved until concentrating on a solo career. Ozzy has been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame and the US Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, plus has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was the first on the Birmingham Walk of Stars.

So just how rich is Ozzy Osbourne? Authoritative sources estimate that Ozzy has a net worth of over $220 million, accumulated during his career in the music industry which began in the late 1960s.

Ozzy’s father John was a toolmaker, and his mother Lillian a factory worker. He was called ‘Ozzy’ in primary school, and adopted it as his stage name. As Ozzy suffers from dyslexia,  school really wasn’t for him except for drama, so he left at 15 and took various jobs, although training as a  plumber, then as an apprentice toolmaker, but spending a short time in jail for petty theft taught him a timely lesson.

Ozzy was really interested in music, and sang with a couple of bands in the late ’60s, one of which became Black Sabbath with bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler,  singer Ozzy Osbourne, drummer Bill Ward, and guitarist and  songwriter Tony Iommi, now the only surviving original member of the band. The band’s style, partly reflected in their name, was very appealing, and they were significantly successful in the UK and USA during the ’70s, with their debut self-titled album, and the follow-up album Paranoid, eventually achieving multi-platinum status. However, Ozzy’s increasing use of drugs saw him leave the band in 1979, although there have been several collaborations since; regardless, his net worth was very well established.

In the early 1980s, the group Necromandus played with Ozzy Osbourne on his first solo project, the Blizzard of Ozz incarnation, also the title of his first solo album, a popular success with  heavy metal fans. Ozzy’s subsequent solo career spread over more than three decades, has increased his net worth the most; seven of the eleven studio albums he has released have achieved multi-platinum certifications in the US alone. A further large financial success has come from annual festival tours called ‘Ozzfest’, of the US and sometimes Europe. It was founded by Ozzy Osbourne and second wife and manager Sharon in the mid-’90s, and performances by many heavy metal and hard rock musical groups have been featured. Since its beginning, sources estimate that over five million people have attended Ozzfest, resulting in revenues of more than $100 million.

Ozzy Osbourne’s net worth also rose sharply as a result of ‘The Osbournes’, a reality television series showcasing the life of the singer and his family which was aired from 2002-05; the show was created by Jonathan Taylor and became one of MTV’s greatest hits. The success of the show led to the Osbournes hosting the 30th Annual American Music Awards in January 2003, and the BRIT Awards held at Earls Court, London in 2008. Various awards and nominations have also helped increase Ozzy’s net worth, including a Grammy Award for the track ‘I Don’t Want to Change the World’, a Godlike Genius Award from NME magazine, among many others.

Additionally. Ozzy won the Literary Achievement honour in 2010, for his autobiography “I Am Ozzy”, which hit the New York Times’  non-fiction best-seller list at No 2. Osbourne has also acted three times as a judge for the Independent Music Awards, which supports independent artists’ careers.

In his less-than-private personal life, Osbourne has been married twice, firstly to Thelma Reese (1971-82), with whom he has a daughter named Jessica Starshine, and a son named Louis John. Ozzy has been married to Sharon Arden since 1982, and their three children are Aimee, Kelly and Jack . Recent rumours of Ozzy’s affairs seem to have done little to break-up the couple. Ozzy openly blames his sometimes controversial lifestyle on drug and alcohol abuse, and praises Sharon for constantly dragging him out of periods of instability. They currently divide their time between residences in Buckinghamshire, England, and Malibu, California.

Ozzy Osbourne Quotes

  • No music mogul created Black Sabbath, so no music mogul could tell Black Sabbath what to do. A couple have tried. We simply told them where to shove it. Not many bands can do that nowadays.
  • The biggest thing in my life were the Beatles. For four lads who came from the back streets, they showed the way out. When people ask me what made me get into rock and roll, I tell them it was when I first heard the Beatles. It was then that I decided that my life will be in music. Thank G-d for the Beatles.
  • Every time I did drugs, I would come close to death. It got to the point where I would worry about choking on my own vomit, so I would have to sleep face down. I do it even to this day… I’m very lucky to be alive and realize that. Nearly all the friends I used to get pissed with are now dead. I am living on borrowed time.
  • I’m sure I’d been exposed to other songs, but I think the first one that had a real effect on me was “She Loves You” by The Beatles. It was just magic – it was like being hit by a bolt of lightning. I even remember where I was and what I was doing. I was walking down the road in Aston one day, with my light blue transistor radio, and this song came on. I thought, ‘What the fuck is that?’ It changed my life forever, and at that point I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I never knew it would turn out the way it did – it turned out way bigger than my wildest expectations – but I knew that I wanted to be the singer in a band. John Lennon was so great with words. He had an amazing way of turning out ridiculous lyrics but making them sound interesting and clever. Sometimes I like more straightforward lyrics, but at the same time, I’m a fan of lyrics that do a number on my head.
  • I’m an alcoholic. And the most unnatural thing for an alcoholic is not to drink. So every now and again I’ll just go and have a few drinks. But it catches up with you and bites you in the butt, you know?
  • I’m not in the band anymore because of musical differences. They were musical. I was different. (On leaving Black Sabbath)
  • I think Christmas is the biggest load of bollocks ever.
  • [on WAAF FM in Boston when hearing that the Spice Girls were playing the date between two OzzFest dates] We can all get blow jobs!
  • That drum fill is the best ever – it still sounds awesome. We love Phil Collins. (On “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins)
  • They keep ’em as clean as they possibly could, but prisons are to punish people, so they don’t exactly have room service, you know.
  • I wish I didn’t have to perform ‘Iron Man’ every night.
  • You gotta be really careful what you bite off. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. It’s a dangerous world.
  • (quashing longtime rumors) I’m not a Satanist. I don’t worship the Devil.
  • I suppose Americans get a kick out of watching a crazy Brit family like us make complete fools of ourselves every week.
  • I kept hearing that metal is dead and Ozzy’s dead and people that like Ozzy are dead. I have never had an empty seat. I’ve always sold out, so who’s saying it’s all over?
  • I got rabies shots for biting the head off a bat but that’s OK – the bat had to get Ozzy shots.
  • I can honestly say, all the bad things that ever happened to me were directly, directly attributed to drugs and alcohol.
  • This has all been such an amazing journey for me. I can vividly remember sitting on the step of my house in Aston, just tripping about what it would be like to be a Beatle. And then, here I am at 58, and I’m at [Elton John]’s party. All these megastars are there, Paul McCartney or whatever. And there’s me with them, standing with all these people I used to admire. It’s like I’ve been in the music industry for 30, 40 years, and it’s just been incredible really.
  • One night in Hamburg, I painted my face purple, and didn’t realise it was indelible. So I had to walk around Hamburg for the next three days with a purple head!
  • One day, my son and I were arguing and he said: “Do you mind if people laugh with you, or at you?” And I said I didn’t give a shit, so long as they were laughing. But really, I was thinking, I wouldn’t like to know for a fact that they’re laughing at me.
  • People thought [‘_The Osbournes_’] was scripted but it wasn’t. They’d sit there with five cameras pointing in all directions just for you to slip on a dog turd or something.
  • On Sharon Osbourne’s colon cancer diagnosis: ‘I freaked out. She’s the love of my life, and she’s also, like, the controller. I couldn’t sleep with her for nine months because I was scared of waking up and she’d died in the night.’
  • It wasn’t as if I had a list, I didn’t have a resumé saying Tuesday – have a pint, strangle the wife, Wednesday – get bail.
  • I knew I was in trouble when I couldn’t make it offstage quick enough to get whatever variety of shit I was tipping down me. I thought to myself: There are people working in gas stations, and all these menial jobs, to put money aside to see the Ozzfest, and I’m more interested in going back to the hotel, and doing a bag of white powder, or whatever shit it is I’m on.
  • The bat thought I was giving him the kiss of life!
  • Recalling an LSD trip: “There were these horses in a field. They were talking to me.”
  • I have a genuine love affair with my audience. When I’m on stage they’re not privileged to see me. It’s a privilege for me to see them.
  • LA’s not a good place to grow old. It’s a Paris Hilton-getting-fucked-up-the-arse kind of town . . . a town full of ambulance chasers.
  • Viagra’s a great sleeping drug. I take Viagra, and Sharon goes right to sleep.
  • Could be worse . . . I could be Sting.
  • Of all the things I’ve lost I miss my mind the most
  • Last year I sang for the Queen of England, met the president of the United States, and got an Emmy and a star on The Walk of Fame. And what did I do? I was just being myself.
  • (Black) Sabbath were a hippy band. We were into peace.
  • I couldn’t be a royal. It’s like living in a supersonic goldfish bowl.
  • A life of booze, drugs and unprotected sex is only going to f*** you up! I mean, look at me!
  • I’m a very simple man. You’ve got to have, like, a computer nowadays to turn the TV on and off…and the nightmare continues.
  • Sometimes I think my whole career and life has only been about a bloody Bat!
  • My mother was an amateur singer, my father was an amateur drunk.
  • The only black magic Sabbath ever got into was a box of chocolates.
  • (On kicking drugs and alcohol for the first time) “All I have to say is this. Sobriety F***ing Sucks!
  • I’ll only retire in the day I should be dead and they have me buried, and some idiot spell over my casket some stupid gospel stuff.
  • They say military have the so-called ‘secret intelligence’ — this amount of intelligence must be very secret, since I’ve never seen any intelligent military person, nor I have seen any sense in the bloody stupid wars.
  • The lifestyle I’ve been living for the last 30 years, I could have been dead a thousand times.

  • Before the success of The Osbournes (2002), he was known by most people as “the singer who bites heads off bats”. This rumor traces back to one isolated incident. On January 20, 1982, at a concert in Des Moines, a bat wound up on stage, which had either been stuck in the rafters or thrown up there by a crazed fan. Osbourne bit it for a goof, thinking it was a rubber toy. He had to take a week of rabies shots. Despite a $25,000 donation later that year to the SPCA, the bat story grew to be an urban legend of its own, to the point where even numerous unrelated heavy metal bands were commonly accused of ritualistically killing live animals on stage.
  • Reunited with Black Sabbath in 1985 for the Live Aid (1985) festival, and again in November of 1992 for the last night of Ozzy’s so-called “final” tour. After the success of this show, the idea of a new Black Sabbath record and full tour was proposed, and the contracts were written up. However, Ozzy decided at the last minute not to sign them. It wasn’t until December of 1997 that all four original members reunited again, to perform and record what would become the live album “Reunion”.
  • His remake with daughter Kelly Osbourne of the Black Sabbath song “Changes” went straight to #1 in the UK when it was released a week after his quad-bike accident.
  • On December 8th, 2003 he was seriously injured while riding his ATV quad bike on the grounds of his Buckinghamshire estate in England. The accident occurred while he was taking a day off from his hectic promotional schedule surrounding the UK release of “Changes” – a duet with his daughter Kelly. He broke his collarbone, six ribs and a vertebra in his neck. The injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, though he has undergone some surgery.
  • Resides in Buckinghamshire, England and Los Angeles, California, USA.
  • Throws a bucket of water on the audience at his concerts.
  • Was one of the first “shock rockers.”
  • Black Sabbath’s name came from a 1963 film (Black Sabbath (1963)) starring Boris Karloff. Sabbath’s early songs reflected the same types of themes that were the centerpiece of those movies. Ozzy later named one of his solo albums “Diary of a Madman”, the title (Diary of a Madman (1963)) of a 1963 Vincent Price horror film.

  • (April 12th, 2002) Honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
  • The cover of his 1982 live album “Speak of the Devil” was partially censored in some stores. The cover depicted a fanged Ozzy with blood (actually raspberry jelly) oozing from his mouth. The stores put a sticker over his mouth to obscure the “blood”. Once Ozzy discovered this, he demanded that the sticker be removed or he would have his record company pull the album from those stores. Not wanting to lose the album sales of an Ozzy Osbourne recording, the stores adhered to Ozzy’s wishes.
  • Arrested in September 1989 after attempting to strangle wife Sharon Osbourne while drunk. He awoke in jail the next day not knowing why he was there. He and Sharon reconciled in October 1990 after Ozzy endured extensive drug rehabilitation.

  • His song “Suicide Solution” created controversy when a fan committed suicide. The fan’s parents alleged that Ozzy was responsible and sued him. The suit was cleared completely.
  • Ozzy has long said that “Suicide Solution”, a song about the dangers of alcoholism, was written as a tribute to former AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott (Bon Scott) who had died an alcohol-related death in 1980. However in 2002, the writer of “Suicide Solution (Ozzy’s former bassist and main lyricist, Bob Daisley), revealed that the song actually alluded to Ozzy himself.
  • Wife Sharon Osbourne is the daughter of his original manager, Don Arden. Arden dropped Osbourne, Sharon took over as his manager, and later married him.
