Tom Smothers Wiki Biography

Thomas Bolyn Smothers III was born on 2 February 1937, in New York City, USA, and is a musician, composer and comedian, best known as one half of the musical comedy duo, The Smothers Brothers, alongside his younger brother Dick. However, all of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.

How rich is Tom Smothers? As of early-2017, sources estimate a net worth that is at $10 million, mostly earned through a successful career in music and comedy. He’s appeared in numerous television shows, mostly alongside his brother; the duo would also have their own variety show, and all of these achievements have ensured the position of his wealth.

Tom was born in an army post hospital, and later his family would move to California. He attended Redondo Union High School, and during his time there was a competitive gymnast as well as unicyclist. After matriculating, he attended San Jose State College (San Jose State University), where he was also part of the school’s track team and gymnastics team.

Smothers initially wanted to be a folk musician with his brother, but he wasn’t convinced that he could be a professional musician. On the other hand, he believed he was great at comedy, so he mixed his comedy bits to the brothers’ music act, and it would lead them to popularity. Their net worth started increasing, and soon Tom would become a regular on “The Steve Allen Show” in 1961. He then made a guest appearance in “Burke’s Law” before the duo was given a sitcom -“The Smothers Brothers Show”, which ran from 1965 to 1966. However, Tom felt that the show wasn’t giving them enough creative control, and soon they would work on another show entitled “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”. Airing in 1967, the show had a lot of sneak in references to taboo subjects of the time. The conflicts between the brothers in the direction of the show would lead it to end. Afterwards, Tom went on to record several mainstream songs.

Smothers would become a lot more politically active later in his career, and would befriend other vocal celebrities such as John Lennon. In 1969, Tom played guitar in the John Lennon single “Give Peace a Chance”. He continued to be vocal on politics issues and would later have issues with Bill Cosby for Cosby’s lack of stand on political issues. Tom also ventured into film roles, including being a part of 1972’s “Get to Know Your Rabbit”. He also did voice work in “The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas”. Some of his later works include a series of Smothers Brothers commercials in 2007. The following year, he was awarded a special Emmy for his work in “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour”. In 2011, he was awarded the Jack Green Civil Liberties Award for his work against television censorship.

For his personal life, it is known that Tom married Marcy Carriker and they have two children. He also has a son from a first marriage.

Tom Smothers Quotes

  • [his evaluation of President Lyndon Johnson] I think he’s indisputably the best president we have at the moment.
  • [11/28/02, interview in Chicago Tribune] I’m watching television and I’m not seeing anything. I watch all the cable shows where you should see some looseness and you’re not hearing anything . . . There’s a general dumbing down of everybody in this country . . . It just kept going and going until it’s gotten to the point where it’s all mean-spirited and vulgar. It not only affects comedy, it affects film. It affects literature. It’s pervasive on radio. There’s that guy Howard Stern and all that smart ass, vulgar, sexual pretending like they’re expanding freedom of speech. They ought to put an amendment to the First Amendment that says there shall also be freedom of hearing.
