Ernest Thornwald Johnson Jr Wiki Biography
Ernest Thornwald Johnson Jr. was born on 7 August 1956, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA, and is a sportscaster, best known for his work with Turner Sports and CBS Sports, especially as the lead television voice for Major League Baseball on TBS, and as the host of “Inside the NBA” for TNT, but all of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.
How rich is Ernie Johnson Jr.? As of mid-2017, sources inform us of a net worth that is at $1.5 million, mostly earned through a successful career in broadcasting; he reportedly earns $300,000 per year thanks to his numerous shows. As he continues his career, it is expected that his wealth will also continue to increase.
Ernie attended the University of Georgia, and during his time there, took a job as the news director for the radio station WAGQ-FM which he held the job for a year, and would then graduate with a degree in journalism as summa cum laude. In 1979, he started broadcasting at WMAZ-TV, becoming a news anchor for two years. He then moved to South Carolina to work as a reporter for WSPA-TV, but in 1982 he moved back to Georgia and took a job at Atlanta’s WSB-TV as a news reporter, also becoming the station’s weekend reporter and sports anchor. In 1989 he joined Turner Sports, and subsequently covered Atlanta Braves baseball games in 1993 to 1996 as part of SportSouth (FSN South).
Johnson then found popularity becoming a studio host for the coverage of the NBA as part of TNT. His net worth started increasing significantly, as he covered halftime, pregame, and postgame shows.
He hosted “Inside the NBA” from the 1990s and has been part of the show ever since. He also has a popular segment at the end of the broadcast entitled “E.J.’s Neat-O Stat of the Night” which has been sponsored by numerous companies, being joined by a lot of former NBA stars for his shows too – he’s hosted shows with Shaquille O’Neal, Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, and Kenny Smith, as well as hosting “Tuesday Fan Night” which is part of NBA TV.
Aside from his coverage of the NBA, he is also the play-by-play announcer for TNT’s coverage of the PGA Tour. He has covered college football too, and in 2002 was awarded a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Personality, Studio Host, which he won again in 2006.
In 2007, he started covering Major League Baseball. Other sports he’s covered in past broadcasts include Wimbledon, National Football League (NFL) coverage, the Goodwill Games, Winter Olympics, and the FIFA World Cup. He was also part of the now-defunct talk show entitled “Listen Up!”, and covered the 2000 Summer Olympics. He is also a sportscaster of the NBA video games “NBA 2K15”, “NBA 2K16”, and “NBA 2K17”. So his net worth continues rising.
For his personal life, it is known that Ernie is married to professional counselor Cheryl, and they have six children, four of whom are adopted. He is a Christian and works regularly with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and Samaritan’s Feet. He is also an Atlanta Braves fan. In 2003, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and started treatment three years later. He returned to work in the same year while continuing his treatments.
