Barbra Joan Streisand Wiki Biography

American author, actress, film director and producer, as well as a singer and songwriter, Barbara Joan “Barbra” Streisand was born on 24 April 1942, in Brooklyn, New York City, of Jewish descent – Polish-Ukrainian from her mother, and Russian through her father. She is actually famous because of her several talents, making her one of the most successful people in several entertainment genres. She has sold over 71 million albums in the US alone, while the number exceeds 245 million worldwide, compiling  a total of 32 albums since 1963 which have entered the top ten albums in the US and many other countries, and the only artist to score a #1in six successive decades.

So just how rich is Barbra Streisand, as of mid-2017? According to authoritative sources, Streisand’s net worth is estimated to be over $380 million, collected from her successful singing and acting career which began in the late 1950s.

Barbra Joan Streisand attended Erasmus Hall High School, at the same time beginning her singing career in 1955, when she recorded several songs in one of New York’s recording studios. She went on to become a nightclub singer and appeared in a variety of local clubs, but it was in “The Lion” where she finally became successful as a singer. Streisand’s performances in clubs gave her many career opportunities, and gained her an appearance on “The Tonight Show”, her first television appearance, followed by other similar appearances, before in 1963 releasing her debut self-titled album. The success of her debut work was immense, as the album peaked at #8 on the Billboard pop charts and received gold certification from the RIAA, as well as two Grammy Awards. Since then, Barbra Streisand has released more than 50 studio albums, 31 of which received platinum certification and 13 multi-platinum – obviously her singing career has had a large influence on her total net worth.

In addition, Barbra Streisand is a noted actress. Since her debut in “Funny Girl”, earning her a Golden Globe Award, as well as an Academy Award, she has worked alongside some of the most famous actors, including Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller in “Meet the Fockers”, Pierce Brosnan in “The Mirror Has Two Faces”, Nick Nolte and Blythe Danner in “The Prince of Tides” and, more recently, Seth Rogan in “The Guilt Trip”. Overall, Streisand has succeeded in winning eight Grammy, five Emmy and a Kennedy Center Honors Awards, to name a few.

In her personal life, Barbra was married to actor Elliott Gould from 1963 to 72 with whom she has a son, and since 1998 has been married to actor James Brolin. They live in Malibu, Southern California.

Her philanthropic efforts are directed through The Streisand Foundation, particularly targeting Jewish charities, including the Jewish University in Jerusalem, and Israeli Defence Force charity.

Barbra Joan Streisand Quotes

  • [on having to establish eating a 50-ounce steak in The Guilt Trip (2012)] That’s where the filmmaker in me came out. The actress didn’t want to do that scene. I said, “Can I come up with something other than eating?” But I thought it would serve the film so I said, “OK, I’ll do it”. But it was hard. I don’t eat steak. One bite for me is enough. So they had to devise a way to make things look like steak. I still had to eat it for three days.
  • [on Dustin Hoffman] We were in the same acting school when I was 16, 17 years old. I used to babysit to get free acting lessons, and he was the janitor.
  • [on playing the mother of a young man in The Guilt Trip (2012)] The fact that I had a son made a big difference. I could relate this to my son and the times we went through, those rebellious periods, how you’re walking on eggshells, how you don’t want to say the wrong thing but you’re always saying the wrong thing.
  • [on Zach Galifianakis] In life I’m not a prude. In film I’m still a prude. Like when I saw that movie The Hangover (2009) with the guy Javalopolis? He was naked in the elevator, and I heard later it was not his real thing. But everybody thinks it’s his real thing.
  • When I sing, people shut up.
  • [on the lack of Academy recognition of Yentl (1983)] In Hollywood a woman can be an actress, a singer, a dancer. But don’t let her be too much more.
  • My niece saw Funny Girl (1968) and said, “How come you’re singing so many songs from Glee (2009)?”.
  • [on connecting] What is exciting is not for one person to be stronger than the other . . . but for two people to have met their match and yet are equally as stubborn, as obstinate, as passionate, as crazy as the other.
  • I arrived in Hollywood without having my nose fixed, my teeth capped, or my name changed. That is very gratifying to me.
  • One thing’s for sure: now when I look at Funny Girl (1968), I think I was gorgeous. I was too beautiful to play Fanny Brice.
  • I hate tooting my own horn, but after Steven Spielberg saw Yentl (1983), he said, “I wish I could tell you how to fix your picture, but I can’t. It’s the best film I’ve seen since Citizen Kane (1941)”.
  • I am simple, complex, generous, selfish, unattractive, beautiful, lazy, and driven.
  • The audience is the barometer of the truth.
  • Oh God, don’t envy me, I have my own pains.

Interestingly, he is clearly seen in the audience at her One Voice (1986) concert at her Malibu ranch, where invitation-only guests paid $5,000 per couple to help establish the Barbra Streisand Foundation, which supports numerous charitable organizations. Apparently, he did not hold grudges.

Columbia was considering Frank Sinatra for the role of Nicky Arnstein, which she vetoed because she didn’t like him. The final musical number, “My Man”, was filmed “live” to both maximize Streisand’s dramatic rendition and because she hated the lip-syncing process.
