Colm J. Meaney was born on the 30th May 1953, in Dublin, Ireland and is an actor perhaps best known to the world for his portrayal of Chief Miles O’ Brien in the TV series “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993-1999), then as Duncan Malloy in the film “Con Air”, and as Don Revie in “The Damned United” (2009), among other differing roles. Meaney’s career started in 1978.
Have you ever wondered how rich Colm Meaney is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Meaney’s net worth is over $10 million, earned through his successful career in the entertainment industry, during which he has appeared in over 100 film and TV roles, including earning a Golden Globe Award nomination for the film “The Snapper” (1993).
Colm grew up in his hometown, becoming interested in acting high school. Having matriculated, he joined the Abbey Theatre School of Acting, and in a couple of years became a part of the Irish National Theatre. Through the ‘70s he appeared in many theaters across England, touring with numerous theatre troupes, including the Focus Company, in which he worked with Gabriel Bryne and Stephen Rea.
He made his screen debut in 1978 in the TV series “Z Cars”, however, he didn’t secure his next role until three years later, when he was cast in another TV series, “Les Roses de Dublin”, as Michael Kavanaugh. He was working his way up in the entertainment world, and had several minor roles until he was selected to play Miles O’Brien in the TV action adventure series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987-1994). His role gradually grew and he became one of the lead characters of the show before its end. Fortunately, “Star Trek” continued with the new series “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”, which lasted from 1993 until 1999, which certainly increased further Colm’s net worth and popularity as well.
During his first stint on “Star Trek”, he made several film appearances too, including those in films “The Dead” (1987), which received an Academy Award nomination, and “Perfect Witness”, which won a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Before the next “Star Trek” began, he starred in the television film “The Snapper”, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination in the category Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. During his stint in the series, Colm made several other appearances, including the lead role in the film “The Van” (1996), then appearing in Simon West’s Academy Award- nominated action thriller “Con Air” (1997), starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Malkovich, and after the series ended, he appeared in “Mystery, Alaska” (1999), among other productions until the end of the decade.
Colm started the new millennium with the lead role in the drama “How Harry Became a Tree” (2001), directed by the acclaimed European director, Goran Paskaljevic, while in 2003 he starred in the romantic comedy “The Boys & Girl from County Clare”, and in 2004 appeared next to Daniel Craig in the thriller “Layer Cake”. Two years later Colm had the lead role in the fantasy drama “A Lobster Tale”, and in 2009 featured in the thriller “Law Abiding Citizen”, next to Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. Colm continued with acting into this decade with the lead role in the film “Parked” (2010), with Colin Morgan and Milka Ahlroth, and then in 2011 starred in the film “The Perfect Stranger”. The same year Colm was selected for the role of Thomas ‘Doc’ Durant in the TV series “Hell on Wheels” (2011-2016), and in 2013 Colm appeared in the Golden Globe Award- nominated biographical drama “One Chance”, all of which increased further his net worth.
Most recently he appeared in films “Pelé: Birth of a Legend” (2016), and “The Journey” (2016), while he is set to appear in the film “Halal Daddy”, which is scheduled for release late in 2017.
Regarding his personal life, Colm has been married to Ines Glorian since 2007; the couple has one daughter together. Previously, he was married to actress Bairbre Dowling from 1977 until 1994, and has a daughter with her, as well.

In both cases, the main characters of the series in question attempted to form an alliance and arrange an exchange of technology before learning that this civilization could not be trusted. Meaney played Cowen, leader of the Genii in three episodes of Stargate: Atlantis (2004); Auberjonois played Alar, leader of the Eurondans, in one episode of Stargate SG-1 (1997).
- Played the same character, Chief Miles Edward O’Brien, on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) for twelve consecutive years from 1987 to 1999. The only other “Star Trek” actor to do this is Michael Dorn.

- Despite having different names in each movie, he played the same character in The Commitments (1991), Screen Two: The Snapper (1993) and The Van (1996).
- His role and rank in the Star Trek series took several years to evolve. Beginning as a crewman in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) the character of Miles O’Brien then graduated to the transporter room and was briefly a lieutenant before being made a chief petty officer, thus joining one of the very few recurring enlisted roles in Star Trek (Mr Leslie and Yeoman Rand being two others from the original series). Transferring to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), the O’Brien character mutated the first two seasons between a warrant officer and an chief warrant officer before again becoming enlisted as a senior chief petty officer around the fourth season. In the last seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), the rank of senior chief was once and for all confirmed and O’Brien became the first-ever Star Trek enlisted character to be given an enlisted rank insignia collar pin.
- Acted in the Focus Company in Dublin with Gabriel Byrne and Stephen Rea in the late 1970s.
- Was a background character on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)’s pilot episode, Encounter at Farpoint (1987). He had a semi-recurring role as “Battle Bridge Conn.” His character was eventually given a name and rank (transporter chief Miles Edward O’Brien). He was made the engineer of DS9 on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) in 1993.
- Former son-in-law of Irish-American actor Vincent Dowling and Brenda Doyle.
