Have you ever wondered how rich Clay Bennet is, as of early 2017? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Bennett’s net worth is as high as $400 million, an amount earned through his successful career as a businessman.
Little is known about Bennett’s roots and growing up, however his career has been put on pedestal. Back in the mid- ‘90s he was a part of the San Antonio Spurs as one of the principal owners; one of his duties was to represent the team on the NBA Board of Governors, since when his presence in the NBA grew continuously, and in 2005 he partnered with the state of Oklahoma, with of Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy Corporation’s Aubrey McClendon, Tom L. Ward of Oklahoma City-based Sand Ridge Energy Corporation, and G’ Jeffrey Records Jr. of Oklahoma City’s MidFirst Bank, to bring the New Orleans Hornets to Oklahoma city. For the next two season, the New Orleans Hornets played their home matches at Ford Center in Oklahoma City, partly due to the massive damage Hurricane Katrina caused to New Orleans.
However, thanks to the success of the Hornets during their stint in Oklahoma, Clay devised a plan to bring the Seattle SuperSonic to Oklahoma City. Having been serving as chairman of the Oklahoma City-based Professional Basketball Club LLC, he bought the SuperSonics from Howard Shultz for $350 million, but the deal was that Bennet tried everything needed for SuperSonics to remain in Seattle. However, he moved the whole franchise to the Oklahoma City and named them the Thunder, erasing all the history and success of the SuperSonics. Since 2008 the Thunder has competed in the NBA, and reached NBA Finals in 2012, losing to the Miami Heat. The success of the club also increased Bennett’s net worth.
Regarding his personal life, Clay has been married to his high school sweetheart Louise Gaylord since 1981; the couple has three children. Clay also had problems with the law – in 2000 he was caught driving under the influence, and received a one-year deferred sentence with addition of 24 hours of community service.
