From an early age, Arjen has played soccer and was a part of the Coerver Method, a way to learn playing soccer from videotapes of some of the best players, such as Pele. Soon enough he joined FC Groningen, thanks to his ball control skills and footwork. He played for the FC Groningen’s first team in 1999-2000 season, and managed to score three goals in the league. For the second season, he appeared in 18 games in the league and scored two goals, but was frequently used as a substitute. All changed in his third season, when he broke into first team permanently, and in total of 34 games he scored in double digits. This led to his transfer to PSV Eindhoven for €3.9million.
In his first season for the new team, Arjen collected 33 appearances and found the net on 12 occasions. He formed a partnership with Mateja Kežman, and the two shared the PSV Player of the Year award. The two were an integral part of PSV’s 17th Dutch title, and Robben also received the Talented Player of the Year award. Unfortunately, his second season wasn’t so good as he suffered several injuries, but still scored nine goals in 34 games. However, it wasn’t all bad for Robben as he found a new club at the end of the season; he was sold to the English side, Chelsea FC for €18 million.
However, injuries continued to nag him, and he missed the start of the season for Chelsea, making his debut in November. Nevertheless, he was back in good form and was one of the best players of the team that won the Premier League title and League Cup that season. Chelsea then repeated the success the following year, with Robben playing in 28 games and scoring six goals. The 2006-07 season was far worse for Robben as injuries were constant and he just couldn’t get a break. However, Real Madrid was interested in his service, and at the end of the season, he was sold to the Spanish giant for €35 million.
He stayed for two seasons in Spain, winning the La Liga title in 2007-2008 season. In 2009 he joined Bayern Munich after he was sold to the German club for around €25 million.
