Josep Guardiola Sala was born on 18 January 1971, in Santpedor, Spain, and is a professional soccer coach and former professional soccer player, best known to be the current manager of Manchester City. He is considered one of the best soccer players of his generation winning numerous titles as a player with Barcelona, as well as being a successful coach, and all of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.
How rich is Pep Guardiola? As of mid-2016, sources estimate a net worth that is at $40 million, mostly earned through a successful career in professional soccer; he reportedly earns a salary of $24 million annually as the manager of Manchester City. As he continues his career, it is expected that his wealth will increase.
Pep started his career at the age of 13, joining Barcelona subsidiary La Masia and quickly rising through the ranks in the next six years. His debut for Barcelona was in 1990, and he would become a team regular just after a year at the age of 20, during which season the team would win both the European Cup and La Liga. The team would go on and retain the La Liga title in the next two years, with Guardiola already considered one of the best players in the world. In 1996, the club would win three cups, but in the next year Pep was mostly out because of injury. A lot of teams were offering to take him, but after long contractual talks, he extended his contract until 2001. In the next three years, he would battle with numerous problems and surgery on his calf. He would eventually leave the team in 2001, having won 16 trophies in his 12 seasons.
During the next few years he would join Italian Serie A’s Brescia, and then transfer to Roma, but was mostly unsuccessful because of a four month drug ban. In 2003, he would move to Al-Ahli in the Qatar Stars League, and would become one of the best players there. He was offered contracts by other teams, but he declined since he was nearing retirement. His last team was Dorados de Sinaloa in Mexico, playing for six months before retiring.
Guardiola was also a part of many international competitions for Spain, including winning gold at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, reaching the quarter finals of the 1994 World Cup, and playing at Euro 2000, reaching the quarter finals once again.
In 2007, Pep was appointed the coach of Barcelona’s B Team which he led to the 2008 Segunda Division B playoffs. After just a year, he would become the manager of the senior Barcelona squad, and in his first season he would guide Barcelona to achieve the domestic cup and league double, and win the European Club title in the same season, the first for any Spanish club. He continued this streak in 2009 with a record six trophies, becoming the first manager to do so. In 2010, he had a total record of 71 wins, 10 losses and 19 draws. In the next two years, Guardiola and Barcelona would continue dominating most competitions, despite a turnover of players. A few notable achievements during this time were a second Champions League Final in 2011, and a Club World Cup win.
After the end of his time with Barcelona, he took a year off and would return to managerial duties, handling the German club Bayern Munich, winning the German league in all three seasons he was in charge, and the cup twice, before becoming the manager of Manchester City in 2016. His record of a more than 75% winning ratio as a manager is unsurpassed in European soccer.
For his personal life, it is known that Guardiola married Cristina Serra in May 2014, and has three children. He is non-religious, and is known to support the political independence of Catalonia. He also reportedly practised German four to five hours a day to prepare for his tenure with Bayern Munich.
