Floyd grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, along with his younger sister, where he attended Fayetteville High School. After his matriculation in 1960, he briefly attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
He began playing golf at an early age, and turned pro in 1961, being aged just 18. Two years later he claimed his first PGA Tour victory, becoming one the youngest winners of a PGA Tour event. He captured three more victories in 1969, and his first major title at the PGA Championship. However, he then went winless for a six-year period, then began to score victories in the mid-’70s, including the 1976 Masters Tournament. He went on to win four times in 1981 and 1982, earning the PGA Championship title again in 1982 – his extraordinary success of shooting a round of 63 has remained the lowest round in a major championship ever since. That year, he finished second in Mark McCormack’s world golf rankings, then in the following year he took the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average on the PGA Tour. His popularity in the world of golf reached an extremely high level, and his wealth was boosted considerably too.
The year 1986 saw Floyd earning his fourth and final major title at the US Open, being the oldest-ever winner of that event at 43. He almost captured another major title at the 1990 Masters, but lost to Nick Faldo on the second playoff hole, and the same almost happened at the 1992 Masters, when he finished two strokes behind the winner Fred Couples. Later that year he scored his final win on the PGA Tour at the Doral-Ryder Open, as one of the oldest players to win a PGA Tour event, aged 49. The gap between his first and last PGA Tour wins was almost 30 years, the longest in tour history.
Floyd also had three Champions Tour victories that year, becoming the first golfer to score wins on both the PGA and Senior PGA tours in the same year. He was placed 14th on the Official World Golf Rankings being aged 50, one of the highest positions ever obtained by a golfer of that age.Floyd went on to play on the Senior Tour, and by 2000 he had scored 14 wins, among them four senior majors and two Senior Tour Championships, continuing to boost his net worth.
Aside from his success on the PGA and Champions Tours, he has won numerous tournaments around the world. He has also played for the US on eight Ryder Cup teams, and serving as a Ryder Cup captain in 1989 and as assistant captain in 2008.
Floyd retired from professional golf in 2010, during the Masters Tournament. Considered as the best at chipping the ball, Floyd’s golf career has enabled him to achieve astonishing popularity and recognition, and to establish a considerable net worth. It has also earned him several honors, such as induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989.
When speaking about his personal life, in 1973 Floyd married Maria Fraietta, with whom he had three children before Maria died of cancer in 2012; Floyd has since remained single.
