Tony is the son of Antoine Rizkallah Kanaan and his wife Miriam, and is of Lebanese ancestry. His family was a part of the upper-middle class, as it owned its own firm, unfortunately his father died when Tony was in his teens, and his uncle stole the family money, which forced Tony to fight for every penny he could earn. A racing enthusiast, Tony moved to Italy, where he started racing and soon won the 1994 Italian Formula Alfa-Boxer Championship. Just two year later he moved to the US, and drove a test race for the Tasman team of the Indy Lights series. In 1997 came his first Indy Lights title, while from 1998 to 2002 he competed in the Champ Car series, but in 92 races he recorded only one win, at the 1999 US 500 Presented by Toyota, held in Michigan. Then in 2002 he debuted in the Verizon IndyCar Series driving for the Mo Nunn Racing, but in 2003 switched to Andretti Green Racing, for which he drove until 2009. He won the championship in 2004, which certainly increased his fame as well as his net worth, and until the present day has 16 wins, with 67 podium finishes, increasing further his net worth. Some of his most notable wins include those accomplished at the Indianapolis 500 in 2013, after many years of near misses and bad luck, then the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2015, among many others, which only benefited to his wealth. Since 2014 has been driving for Target Chip Ganassi Racing.
Regarding his personal life, Tony has been married to Lauren Bohlander since 2013. He is close friends with race car driver Dario Franchitti, whom he replaced in the Target Chip Ganassi Racing in 2014, after Dario suffered career-ending injuries in a crash in one of the races.
