Sourav Ganguly Wiki Biography
Sourav Chandidas Ganguly was born on 8 July 1972, in Calcutta, West Bengal, India, and is a retired cricketer, best known as the former captain of the Indian national team. He is also the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal. All of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.
How rich is Sourav Ganguly? As of early-2017, sources inform us of a net worth that is at $80 million, mostly earned through a successful career in cricket. He is considered as one of the most successful Indian cricket captains, but also starred in one-day cricket (ODI). As he continues his endeavors, it is expected that his wealth will also continue to increase.
Sourav grew up in luxury thanks to his father being one of the richest men in the city. He was initially interested in football and he didn’t have support when he first started pursuing cricket.
His brother Snehasish who played for the Bengal cricket team eventually helped him pursue a cricketing career – he attended a cricket academy, and would become the captain of St Xavier’s School’s cricket team. He had several issues during this period, with teammates saying that he didn’t do menial tasks that were below his social status. Despite that, he made his first-class cricket debut for Bengal in 1989.
His attitude would lead him to be removed from the team. He then played in domestic cricket, and was called to the National team in 1996, making his Test debut against England and would become the third cricketer to score a century on his debut at Lord’s Cricket Ground. He then made another century during the next test, also only the third to score centuries in his first two test innings. He continued to win awards over the next few years, making his maiden ODI century in 1997, and winning the Man of the Match award during the final of the Independence Cup at Dhaka in 1998. He was also a part of the 1999 Indian World Cup team and would score the second highest score in World Cup history with 183.
In 2000, Sourav was named the captain of the Indian cricket team and led India to a win against South Africa. They got to the finals of the 2000 ICC Knock Out trophy, and he would score a century in the final. In 2003, India would reach the World Cup Final for the first time since 1983, however they lost to Australia. The following year, although now considered as the most successful cricket captain of India, poor form in 2005 led him being dropped from the team.
In 2006, he made a successful Test comeback, and was recalled to the ODI team, including for the 2007 Cricket World Cup, however, they were knocked out of the tournament during the group stage. In 2007, he made his first double century and remained in top form the entire year. The following year, he became the captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as part of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was also being projected as a candidate for President of the CAB, having announced that his Test series against Australia in 2008 would be his last, during which he scored his last test century. He would then become the chairman of the CAB’s Cricket Development Committee, but continued to play in the IPL and the Ranji Cup before officially retiring in 2012.
For his personal life, it is known that Sourav married Dona in 1997, and they have a daughter. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004 – which is the fourth highest civilian award in India – thanks to his contribution in sports.
