Scott McNealy Wiki Biography

Scott McNealy was born on 13 November 1954, in Columbus, Indiana USA, and is a businessman best known for being the co-founder of the computer technology company Sun Microsystems, along with Vinod Khosla, Andy Bechtolsheim and Bill Joy. He is also the co-founder of Curriki and Waylin. All of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.

How rich is Scott McNealy? As of mid-2016, authoritative sources inform us of a net worth that is at $1 billion, mostly earned through the success of his businesses. Sun Microsystems was one of the first successful companies to set up in Silicon Valley. He’s also written a book, and all of these activities have ensured the position of his wealth.

Scott attended and matriculated from Cranbook School, and then Harvard University, graduating with a degree in Economics, moving on to securing an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He started out working at American Motors which was his father’s company.

In 1982, he became a part of Onyx Systems as the manufacturing director, responsible for handling the creation of Unix systems. McNealy was then approached by Vinod Khosla to start a company based on an original project they had at Stanford University called the Stanford University Network (SUN) workstation. Much like the Oracle Corporation, 3Com, and Apple Incorporated, Sun Microsystems was one of the first companies to revolutionize computers from the 1980s. Most of McNealy’s experience was in automotive manufacturing, and it helped propel Sun to success. In just a year, he promoted the sales of the company to jump from $9 million to $39 million. They became public in 1986, and after two years would have annual sales amounting to $1 billion, also increasing Scott’s net worth significantly.

Two years after establishing the company, Scott became the CEO, while Khosla would leave the company in 1985 due to a dispute with the board of directors. McNealy would serve in that position for 22 years before Jonathan Schwartz succeeded him. The company’s stock would increase during the dotcom boom of the ’90s up to the 2000s and despite a decline afterwards, they were able to slowly recover. One of the most significant advancements that Sun made was the Java software, and they would become rivals with other companies such as Microsoft.

Following his many years of service, Scott is now known as one of the few CEOs who have managed to serve in their position for over 20 years. Interestingly, part of his success was due to the fact that he had a background in business instead of computers.

Additionally, Scott has written a book entitled “The Decline and Fall of Nokia”, in which he stated that he was a “dream candidate” of becoming the CEO of Nokia, but was not offered the job.

For his personal life, it is known that Scott has been married to Susan since 1994, and they have four sons. He’s known to play ice hockey and golf, becoming well known for his golfing skills in business circles. He is the commissioner of the Alternative Golf Association and is a friend of Mitt Romney, whom Scott supported during his 2012 presidential campaign.
