Richard Crispin Armitage was born on 22 August 1971, in Huncote, Leicestershire, England, and is an actor, known for working in television, theatre, film, and voice acting. He was part of “The Hobbit” film trilogy adaptation as the dwarf prince Thorin Oakenshield. All of his efforts have helped put his net worth to where it is today.

How rich is Richard Armitage? As of early-2017, sources inform us of a net worth that is at $2 million, mostly earned through a successful career in acting which began in the late 1980s. Other projects he’s been a part of include “The Crucible”, “Hannibal”, “Spooks” and “Robin Hood”. As he continues his career, it is expected that his wealth will continue to increase.

Richard attended Brockington College, and during his time there, started pursuing an interest in music. He played the cello with local orchestras, and also learned to play the flute. He eventually transferred to Pattison College and there focused on drama. He graduated with A Levels in Music and English, having also performed in various productions such as “Half a Sixpence”, “The Hobbit”, and “Showboat” at The Alex in Birmingham.

In 1988, he earned his Equity Card with Nachtcircus in Budapest before returning to England to pursue a career in theatre. He appeared in various productions, such as “42nd Street”, “My One and Only”, “Cats”, “Six Degrees of Separation” and “Death of a Salesman”. In 1992, he enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) to continue his acting studies. He stayed there for three years and then returned to theatre in a production of “Macbeth”, and he also started taking small roles in film and television. One of his first major television roles was the drama “Sparkhouse”, which led him to pursue more television projects. He would then become a part of “Ultimate Force”, “Between the Sheets”, and “Cold Feet”.

In 2004, Armitage got his first leading role in “North & South”, playing John Thornton the textile mill owner, which became very successful and led to him increasing his net worth. He became very popular, and would then be cast in the BBC series “ShakespeaRe-Told”. Other work he’s done includes “The Impressionists” and “The Golden Hour”, and in 2006 he was cast in “Robin Hood” as Guy of Gisborne, staying with the show until the final series in 2009. Around this time, he appeared in other projects such as “Ordeal by Innocence” and “Spooks” in which he played Lucas North, remaining in the show until series nine. In 2010, he then starred in “Strike Back” as John Porter, a role which would lead him to be cast in “Captain America: The First Avenger” – his net worth was rising steadily.

In 2010, he got one of his biggest roles as Thorin Oakenshield in the three part film series, “The Hobbit”, released in 2012 to 2014. During this time, he also became part of the film “Into the Storm”, and was cast in “Urban Grimshaw and the Shed Crew”. His next project would be the play “The Crucible”, for which he received an Olivier Award nomination. In 2015, he was cast in “Hannibal’ and appeared in six episodes, continuing to earn critical acclaim. One of his latest projects is “Ocean’s Eight” which is in production in 2017.

Aside from acting, Armitage has also done voice work; he’s recorded 11 audio books including “The Lords of the North”, “The Convenient Marriage”, and “Venetia”.

For his personal life, it is known that Richard is now engaged to Samantha Colley. In interviews, he refused to describe himself as a method actor; according to him it’s easy to believe you are the character rather than pretending to be it, so he takes the term “concentrating actor”. He also enjoys looking for dualism in the characters he plays.

Richard Crispin Armitage Quotes

  • [on his professional quandary, as a six-foot-two actor, in playing Thorin, the Dwarf King] I think the biggest challenge for me is that when I walk into a room they think the wrong guy has come to the audition. It’s a compliment, but on a business level it’s difficult because it’s hard to convince people it was really me playing the role.
  • [on suffering an injury on the set of Spooks before his first audition for Thorin Oakenshield] I had taken so many painkillers that I hobbled into the room, sat on my hands and the whole meeting passed in a bit of a blur. If nothing else, I think, with my audition I may have succeeded in showing my ability to convey pain!
  • I don’t think actors need to go on pedestals. I don’t buy it. I think it’s a weird thing. It’s like you become someone else, like stepping into another universe.
  • Live acting is a kind of adventure sport. I don’t go abseiling or snowboarding, but I sometimes think that stepping out on stage can have the same kind of adrenaline rush.
  • You can spend a bit of yourself when you give yourself to a character. At the end of a job, you have to remind yourself who and what you are.
  • I try to be quite a detailed actor. People were really picking up on that. Even if it was just a flicker of the eye or something, they got it.
