Richard Benjamin Harrison Jr. Wiki Biography

Richard Benjamin “Old Man” Harrison Jr. was born on 4 March 1941, in Danville, Virginia USA, best known as the co-owner of the The World Famous Gold and Silver Pawn Shop, as well as being a reality TV star. The nickname Old Man stuck to Richard in his late 30s because of his appearance and behaviour.

So just how rich is “Old Man” Harrison? Sources estimate that Harrison has a net worth of $9 million. One could say that all of Harrison‘s net worth comes from his pawn shop, first from sales from the shop, and later on from his and it‘s television appearances including in it‘s own show.

Harrison and his family moved to Lexington, North Carolina, where Richard attended Lexington High School but left in his junior years. The family was poor, and Richard worked as a school bus driver from the age of 14 to make the ends meet, rising extremely early and making from five to six dollars a week. In the late 1950s, Harrison was convicted of car theft, and chose to serve in the Navy rather than go to jail – he served virtually continuously for 20 years.

Harrison‘s last posting was to San Diego, where his wife became a real estate agent and after discharge Richard worked in her office. However, when the business went broke, the family moved to Las Vegas, where Richard and son Rick started their own business by establishing a shop named Gold and Silver Pawn Shop. In 1989 this became “The World Famous Gold and Silver Pawn Shop“, and was the point when Harrison started raising his net worth, by working there 24/7. His store gained a big boost in popularity all over the United States when it was featured on a Comedy Central show “Insomniac with Dave Attell“, which increased customer numbers from 70 to 700.

Subsequently, Richard and his son looked for ways to get their own show on television. Son Rick pitched the idea to various studios until it was picked up by the History channel. Their show, “Pawn Stars”, debuted in July 2009, has now aired over 250 episodes in seven seasons, and has proven to be the most popular show on the History channel, spawning several shows trying to get a slice of the pie on different channels, like “American Restoration“.

Harrison and his family have received various awards over the years, including the key to the city of Las Vegas in 2010, and the key to the city of Lexington in 2012. Father and son were also nominated to be included in the 2012 Time 100 list. As for his personal life, Richard Harrison met Jo-Anne Rhue, his future wife, at a barn dance when he was 17 and married in 1960. They have four children – Sherry, Joseph, Rick, and Chris. Sherry was born first, but had medical complications and died when she was six. Richard‘s particular hobby is collecting all sorts of cars. For one particular car, a 1966 Chrysler Imperial, he fought for fifteen years until he convinced the owner to sell it to him. Harrison‘s other passion is, of course, his shop. He has not missed a day of work there for over 17 years.
