Peter Cullen Wiki Biography

Peter Claver Cullen was born on the 28th July 1941, in Montreal, Quebec Canada, and is a voice actor, best known for his voice of Optimus Prime in the original “Transformers” series in the 80’s, and then in the live-action movie in 2007. Thanks to his voice talent and Transformers franchise, Cullen’s net worth significantly increased. His career in the entertainment industry has been active since 1962.

Have you ever wondered how rich Peter Cullen is, as of mid- 2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Cullen’s net worth is as high as $6 million, earned through his successful career as a voice actor. In addition to giving his voice to various characters on TV and film, Cullen has also appeared in numerous series which improved his wealth.

Peter Cullen was born to Muriel and Henry L. Cullen and has two brothers and a sister. He went to the Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, and graduated from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1963, a member of the first class. Peter’s brother Larry was the biggest inspiration in creating Optimus Prime voice; Larry is a retired Captain of the US Marine Corps.Cullen started as Commander Bi Bi Latuque in the TV series “The Buddies” in 1967, and was also an announcer in 42 episodes of “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” (1967-1968). He then appeared in the drama “Prologue” (1970), “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour” (1971-1972), and gave his voice to King Kong in “King Kong” (1976) starring Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, and Jessica Lange. His net worth was well established.

Peter was quite busy in the early ’80’s with parts in “Trollkins” (1981), “Goldie Gold and Action Jack” (1981), “The Kwicky Koala Show” (1981), “The Little Rascals” (1982), and “The Dukes” (1983). Cullen continued with “Pac-Man” (1982-1983), “The Biskitts” (1983), “Snorks” (1984), and Joe Dante’s “Gremlins” (1984). He also had roles in “Voltron: Defender of the Universe” (1984-1985), “Challenge of the GoBots” (1984-1985), “Alvin & the Chipmunks” (1984-1985), “Dungeons & Dragons” (1983-1985), “Galtar and the Golden Lance” (1985), and “Rainbow Brite” (1984-1986).

However, the role that gained Cullen international fame was as Optimus Prime in the series “The Transformers” (1984-1987), the success of which significantly increased his net worth, but he didn’t stop there and continued with other projects. By the end of the ’80’s, Cullen had more roles, in “G.I. Joe” (1985-1986), “The Transformers: The Movie” (1986), “Ghostbusters” (1986-1987), “Rambo” (1986), “Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs” (1987-1988), “Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers” (1988-1989), and “The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh” (1988-1991).

In the ’90’s, Cullen appeared in “Widget, the World Watcher” (1990-1991), “The Pirates of Dark Water” (1991-1993), and “The Savage Dragon” (1995-1996), among others. In 2000’s, Cullen participated in several projects such as “The Book of Pooh” (2001), “House of Mouse” (2001-2002), “IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix” (2005-2006), and “My Friends Tigger & Pooh” (2007-2008). However, he dedicated most of his time to The Transformers franchise, starting with the 2007 blockbuster movie starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Josh Duhamel which generated more money to his bank account. He filmed two new Transformers movies: “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (2009) with Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Josh Duhamel, and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” (2011) with Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Tyrese Gibson. Cullen also contributed to the animated series “Transformers Prime” (2010-2013), “Transformers: Rescue Bots” (2011-2016), and most recently ‘Transformers: Robots in Disguise” (2015-2016).

Regarding his personal life, Peter Cullen apparently has four children and three grandchildren, but other aspects of his life remain private.

Peter Cullen Trademarks

  1. Often provides a deep raspy voice for his characters, most notably Optimus Prime
  2. The voice of Optimus Prime, the heroic leader of the Autobots on The Transformers (1984)

Peter Cullen Quotes

  • I always try to make a voice to go with the characteristics – if the guy’s a hothead or he’s cool, whatever.
  • I kind of modeled Optimus Prime’s voice out of many people I had known over the years, my family especially.
  • The phenomenon of The Transformers (1984) itself is mind-shaking, you know?
  • As a young actor, I would be invited to the CBC radio drama department to do voices for different characters, and I found that I could do quite a few of them. I wasn’t a visual presence, and I found it easier to construct a voice from the written page.
  • I’m always involved with the Aerospace Program and NASA and Goddard Space Flight Center. And if kids feel so inclined, they can log onto NASA and the Optimus Prime Spinoff Award, which we present every year to some of the brilliant young minds that are taking up into the academics of space, science, technology, math.
  • I immerse myself right into my character whether or not I’m relating to people live as an actor on stage or whatever.
  • My brother was a captain in the Marine Corps and a very big hero in my life.
  • I enjoy dramatic narration, of course, because I’m an actor and I started as an actor. But I love things that are a challenge, and I look forward to more work with that in the future. So there’s always a sun coming up the following day for me.
  • Everybody’s going to approach a character differently, depending upon what they bring to it on their own intellectual level or their feelings from their heart and soul.

Peter Cullen Important Facts

  • Father-in-law of Molly Culver.
  • Occasionally provides the narration for movie trailers. Most notably for Batman & Robin (1997) and Spawn (1997).
  • Provided the roar of the title character in King Kong (1976), injuring his throat in the process. The experience turned him off of voicing inhuman sounds, though he later made an exception for Predator (1987).
  • His older brother, Larry Cullen, was a retired Captain in the United States Marine Corps, and helped inspire the voice of Optimus Prime.
  • He was the first actor to voice Nintendo’s video game mascot Mario – of Super Mario Brothers – for the Saturday Supercade series.
  • Attended and graduated from the National Theater School of Canada in Montreal, Quebec (1963).
  • Attended and graduated from Regiopolios-Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Kingston, Ontario.
  • Stated that of all the roles that he has done, his signature role, Optimus Prime, is his favorite. He described playing Prime in the 2007 film as “slipping into a very old, very comfortable pair of shoes”. He explained his preference for the character by saying “making people happy makes me happy”.
  • Has stated that the voice of legendary American film actor John Wayne had some influence on his choice for the voice of Optimus Prime. However, he clarified in an interview for the 2007 Transformers video game that the inspiration for Prime’s voice was actually based on an impression of his older brother’s voice — the authoritative tone he used while serving as an officer with the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
  • Was one of only three voice-over actors from The Transformers (1984) animated series to voice a character in the live-action film versions Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011). The others being Charles Adler and Frank Welker. Cullen once again provided the voice of the heroic Autobot leader Optimus Prime for the films.
  • Though he provided vocals for the inhuman alien Predator in the Predator films and the voice of Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, he is best known for voicing the heroic Autobot leader Optimus Prime on The Transformers (1984) animated series. Though this was originally intended for his character to remain dead after being killed in The Transformers: The Movie (1986), the death caused such a public backlash that the surprised producers brought the character back in two separate episodes of the third season (ultimately saving the world in the second appearance).
  • Has been the voice of two characters involved in chicken runs (when two cars drive towards each other). The first was the evil K.A.R.R. in the television series episode Knight Rider: Trust Doesn’t Rust (1982). The second was the heroic Autobot leader Optimus Prime on the animated series The Transformers (1984).
  • Has four children: Clay Cullen, Angus Cullen, Claire Cullen and Pilar E. Cullen.
  • Frequently does voice-overs for commercials, cartoons, movie previews, etc.
