Born in San Francisco, but growing up in Minnesota, Najarian is the son of John Najarian, a renowned transplant surgeon. He originally planned to be a professional American football player, trying out with different colleges, but finally studying at and graduating from the University of Minnesota. He played for the Golden Gophers as a linebacker, becoming part of the All-Big Ten second team from 1983 to 1985.
