Mike Smith (American Football Coach) Wiki Biography
Mike Smith was born on the 13th June 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, USA, and is a professional American Football coach, best known as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL) from 2008 to 2014. At the present time, he is recognized as the defensive coordinator for the NFL team Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His career in the sport industry has been active since 1982.
Have you ever wondered how rich is Mike Smith, as of early 2016? Sources estimate that the overall size of Mike’s net worth is over $12 million; his salary is now reputed to be $4.5 million per year. The main source of this amount of money is, of course, his career as a professional coach.
Mike Smith was raised with seven siblings in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he started playing football. He attended Father Lopez Catholic High School, and during that time he played in the position of linebacker, and won all-state honors. Later, he continued education at East Tennessee State University, where he played in the college team from 1977 to 1981. He was twice MVP and then in 1982 he became a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers which compete in the Canadian Football League. However, apparently in no time at all, he decided to retire as a player and start pursuing a career as a professional football coach.
Firstly, he was hired as graduate assistant for San Diego State, but then moved to the position of linebacker coach. In 1986 he was defensive line coach for Morehead State, and through 1987 he was defensive line coach for the Tennessee Tech, then through 1988-1995 special teams coach. The following season, he was appointed as the defensive coordinator for the same team, and served until 1998. His net worth was well established.
Mike’s net worth further increased in 1999, when he was appointed as defensive assistant & defensive line coach of the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. He stayed with the team until 2003, but for the 2002 season he was coach of the linebackers. The following season, Mike became defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars also in the NFL, and stayed with the team until 2007. In 2008, Mike brought his career to a new level, becoming the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, where he stayed until 2014, and during that period his overall net worth increased to a large degree. The best season he had with the Falcons was 2012, when they reached the playoffs, but his team lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. In the following two seasons, his win-loss percentage began to decline, as he had records of 4-12 and 6-10 in those two years.
Two years later after he was fired Mike found engagement as the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which further added to his overall net worth.
Thanks to his successful career, Mike earned several awards, including the Sporting News NFL Coach of the Year Award three times, in 2008, 2010 and 2012, and also the AP NFL Coach of the Year Award in 2008.
Speaking about his personal life, Mike Smith is married to Julie, with whom he has a daughter, and lives with his family in Suwanee, Georgia. He is the brother-in-law of Brian Billick, a retired NFL head coach.
