Born Marcus Dell Gastineau on the 20th November 1956, in Ardmore, Oklahoma USA, he is a retired professional American Football player, who played as a defensive end for the New York Jets of the NFL, and for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. His career was active from 1979 until 1990.

Although born in Ardmore, he and his parents moved to Springerville, Arizona when he was seven, as his parents had bought a ranch. The following year Mark broke his leg so badly that doctors predicted that he wouldn`t be able to even walk again; fortunately Mark managed to fully recover, and when he turned 12 he started competing in team-roping events.

He went to the Round Valley High School and, encouraged by his father, Mark began playing football. He had several notable results, but still couldn`t attract some of the prestigious universities, and in the end enrolled at Eastern Arizona Junior College, where he played for the men`s football team and earned All-America honors. After one season he transferred to Arizona State University, where he also played for one season, before eventually becoming a student of East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma., and while there he was rewarded with Outstanding Defensive Lineman honors for the North in the 1979 Senior Bowl.

After a successful football career in college, Mark declared for the 1979 NFL Draft, and was selected in the second round as the 41st overall pick by the New York Jets, which marked the start of his professional career and the start of his net worth as he signed a rookie contract, however, details weren`t made public.

For the next 10 seasons, Mark played for the Jets, and has left a permanent mark in both franchise and league history; his career saw a slow start as he recorded only 2 sacks in his first 16 games, however, the next season was his breakout one, as he had 11.5 sacks. In 1981 he set his career high with 20 sacks, but that record was later broken in 1984, when he had 22 sacks. Until 1988 he recorded a total of 107.5 sacks which made him one of the best defensive players in the league. Unfortunately he was forced to retire after several injuries, and also needed more time to dedicate to his wife who was battling with cancer.

Two years later he signed a contract with the Canadian football league team BC Lions, but after only four games, he was released by the club`s officials.

During his career, Mark won several prestigious awards and recognitions, including five Pro Bowl appearances from 1981 to 1985, in 1982 he was named the NEA NFL Defensive Player of the Year and in 1984 he was UPI AFL-AFC Player of the Year and the MVP of the Pro-Bowl game.Furthermore, Mark was inducted into New York Jets Ring of Honor, and was selected in for the New York Jets All-Time Four Decade Team.Apart from his career in football, Mark was also a boxer, compiling a record of 15 wins and two losses during five years ending in 1996, which also increased his net worth.
