Lisa Lopes Wiki Biography

Lisa Lopes, perhaps better known by her stage name “Left Eye”, was born on the 27th March 1971, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, and was a Grammy Award-winning hip hop singer, songwriter, and producer, best known as a member of the girl group TLC. Lopes’ career started in 1990 and ended in 2002 with her death in a vehicle accident.

Have you ever wondered how rich Lisa Lopes was at the time of her death? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Lopes’ net worth was as high as $5 million, an amount earned through her successful career in music. In addition to being a member of a popular group, Lopes also recorded a solo album which improved her wealth too.

Lisa Lopes was born as a daughter of Ronald Lopes Sr., a US Army staff sergeant, and Wanda, a seamstress. She grew up with her brother Ronald and younger sister Reigndrop, and the three of them sang gospel songs, performing as The Lopes Kids at local events and churches. Lisa went to Philadelphia High School for Girls, and after matriculation, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to audition for a new girl group.

In the beginning, the group’s name was 2nd Nature, but it was quickly renamed to TLC, which stands for initials of Tionne, Lisa, and Crystal. In 1992, TLC released their debut album entitled “Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip”, which achieved multi-platinum status with over four million copies sold in the US alone, reaching No. 14 on US Billboard 200, No. 2 on US Heatseekers and No. 3 on US R&B Albums charts. Two years later, the group released its second studio album called “CrazySexyCool”, which was their most successful commercial release, recording more than 11 million sales in the US, and an additional two million worldwide. It peaked at the No. 3 on the US Billboard 200, No. 4 on UK Albums, No. 2 on US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and topped the UK R&B Albums chart. The album consisted of several hit singles, including “Creep”, “Diggin’ on You”, “Red Light Special”, and “If I Was Your Girlfriend”. Among numerous awards, the release earned two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

In 1999, TLC recorded their third studio album entitled “FanMail”, which achieved 6x platinum status, and made over 10 million sales worldwide, which only increased Lisa’s net worth. It topped the US Billboard 200, US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and UK R&B Albums, while it reached the No. 2 on the UK Albums chart. The singles “No Scrubs”, “Unpretty”, and “I’m Good at Being Bad” were positioned among the top songs on numerous charts. The release won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, while the song “No Scrubs” won awards for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best R&B Song.

The TLC’s fourth and final album “3D” came out in 2002, seven months after Lopes’ death, and it achieved platinum status too, and also had reasonable success in top charts such as Billboard and UK Albums.

Lisa Lopes recorded one solo album entitled “Supernova” (2001), but she took almost four years to get it done, while in 2009, her posthumous release “Eye Legacy” saw daylight, featuring notable fellow artists such as Missy Elliott, Chamillionaire, and Bone Crusher, among others.

Regarding her personal life, Lisa Lopes was involved in an incident when she set her then-boyfriend’ Andre Rison’s house on fire – allegedly after suffering physical abuse – and was sentenced to five years on probation. She had several tattoos, but the most obvious was the number 80 around the eagle, in honour of Rison who played for the Atlanta Falcons at the time. Lisa died on the 25th April 2002 in Honduras in a car accident, the only person fatally injured in the crash.

Lisa Lopes Quotes

  • The only thing I’ve ever wanted to do was to help people, because there are a lot of sick people in the world, a lot of people who are struggling and suffering and they’re just not happy. And I used to be one of those people, and I used to wish that my life would end, you know. If I was 20 I’d say ‘Oh I can’t stand to…I don’t know if I’m going to live to be another 20 years, I can’t take another 20 years of what I’ve been through’. And my mom would look at me and say ‘Oh I’m so sad to hear you say that, and if you don’t know what it feels like to be happy, you don’t know what you don’t know’. It’s like there’s no hope. But it doesn’t really have to be that way. I just want to make music and I want to do a lot of things that are really going to inspire people, and improve the quality of their lives.
  • [on Tupac Shakur]: I got a chance to go to his house a few months before he passed on and um, it was weird, it was a very weird experience because everything that was in my cabinets was in his cabinets. Down to the seasonings in the kitchen, the types of food that we ate, the pot set, the chairs that we sat in. I look at the way that his life was and I don’t know, I see a lot of that in me.
  • It was a little weird being in the presence of Tupac, and we’re very similar. Similar to the point where we almost clashed, we’re both Geminis and it was almost like four people being in the room.
  • [on her short-lived experience in jail while awaiting relocation to detox] I just felt uncomfortable. I wasn’t really scared until I started walking down the hall. I started to think, “What if a girl tries to rape me, or what if someone tries to bully me because I’m Left Eye.” That kind of stuff was running through my head. But as soon as I turned the corner and all the girls saw me, they started cheering. They were like, “Whoooo! Left Eye! Left Eye!” So I started pimping, like, “Yeah! What’s up?” First I was walking like I was scared, but when they started yelling and screaming my name, I stood upright and I felt confident. Like okay, I’m not gone have to worry about that stuff I was just thinking about. I was like, “All right!” The whole time I was there I was just cool. I didn’t have a problem with nobody and nobody had a problem with me. I wasn’t like stuck in a corner crying like, “What am I going to do?” As soon as I got there, I joined in the card game. There were people who were excited. They were calling their family. They were like, “Left Eye, can you say hi to my little nephew?” I was like, “Sure, whatever, no problem.”
  • [about Tupac Shakur] No, we never slept together. That was one of the first things he told me. He said, “Don’t ever let me sleep with you. I don’t care what I say, I don’t care how. I don’t care what I do, just don’t let it happen”. So I stuck by that because I didn’t want to mess anything up.
  • I have always been a very spiritual woman, I think we all have different heavens. Mine will probably be me re-living my life over -Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes on death.
  • There’s a thin line between genius and insanity – and I always get labelled as being the crazy one
  • “I felt like an outcast. It used to be the three of us being very silly, and then it was just the two of them being silly. I didn’t feel silly anymore.” (on her falling-out with her TLC bandmates)
