Joseph William Namath was born on 31st May 1943, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania USA, to immigrant parents from Hungary. He is a retired American football player as well as an actor, who is usually named Joe Willie or Broadway Joe. He is an inductee into the Professional Football Hall of Fame (1985) for his great achievements in sport. Joe Namath has been accumulating his net worth firstly as a professional football player from 1965 to 1977; secondly he has added considerable sums to his wealth as an actor since 1970.
How rich is this former football player and actor? Under the latest estimations, Joe Namath’s net worth is as much as $18 million.
Joe Namath studied at Beaver Falls High School, where he first showed his sporting talent. He played in the position of an outfielder in baseball, guard in basketball and quarterback in football. After graduation from high school Joe received many offers to play in baseball and football teams, and eventually chose the University of Alabama. He was a member of The Alabama Crimson Tide football team during 1962 – 1964, coached by Howard Schnellenberger, leading the team to the national title in 1964 and an overall 29-4 winning record. However, he decided to pursue a professional football career, so he only graduated from university in 2007.
In 1965, both the upstart American Football League and the National Football League offered him contracts, but Joe Namath decided to sign a contract for three years with the New York Jets team (AFL at that time)) for a then record contract of $427,000, obviously an enormous start to his net worth. This was when he was labelled ‘Broadway Joe’, as he was featured by Sports Illustrated magazine.
Joe Namath played in the position of quarterback in the above mentioned team until 1976, though, leading the team to victory in Super Bowl III in 1969, before the two Leagues merged the following year . The season of 1977 he spent in the Los Angeles Rams team, but multiple injuries spelt the end of his playing days. Over his career he set the record of being the first quarterback to throw 4,000 yards in one season, and received many awards as follows AFL All-Star selection (1965, 1967, 1968, 1969), UPI AFL Rookie of the Year (1965), New York City Award (1969), American Football League Champion (1968) and many others which also increased the overall amount of Joe Namath’s net worth. In 1999, he was inducted into the list of the 100 Greatest Football Players by The Sporting News magazine.
In addition to being a successful sportsman, Joe then landed a career as an actor, too. He played roles in the following films: “C.C. and Company” (1970) directed by Seymour Robbie, “Underdogs” (2013) directed by Doug Dearth and “The Wedding Ringer” (2015) directed and co-written by Jeremy Garelick. More, he landed the main role in the series “The Waverly Wonders” (1978), not to mention a number of episodic appearances in such popular series as “Married… with Children” (1988), “The A-Team” (1990) and many other series. He was a co-host together with Dick Schaap of the talk show “The Joe Namath Show” (1969) and commented on the NFL games during the 1985 season. At present, Joe and Kristy Villa host “The Competitive Edge” (2015 – present). All those appearances also added sums to Joe Namath net worth, too.
In 1983, Joe fell in love with an actress Deborah Mays, who was 19 years younger than Namath. Nevertheless, they married a year later, and they have two daughters. However, they divorced in 2000, and currently Joe Namath is single. Namath entered alcohol rehabilitation in 2003, and later explained his problems in his autobiography ‘Namath’.
