Joe Elliott Wiki Biography

Joe Elliott was born on the 1st August 1959, in Sheffield, England. He is a singer, songwriter, and musician, best known as the lead singer of the rock band Def Leppard. Elliott was also the lead singer of the “Cybernauts”, a David Bowie tribute band, and a cover band named Down ‘n’ Outz. The majority of is wealth he has made in the music industry since his career started in 1975.

Have you ever wondered how rich Joe Elliot is, as of mid-2016? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Joe Elliott’s net worth is $70 million. He wrote songs and was a leading singer in some other bands apart from Def Leppard, but arguably the best hard-rock band of the ’80’s is his primary source of income.

Joseph Thomas Elliott attended the King Edward VII School in Sheffield. The story how “Def Leppard” was formed is interesting. In 1977, Elliott met Pete Willis, entirely accidentally, after missing a bus. Willis was the member of the band called Atomic Mass, and he introduced Elliott to other band members. Elliott tried to play guitar, but he had ideas to be a lead singer of a band. His suggestion of the band’s new name Deaf Leopard was well received by other members, but they wanted to be more “ear-catching” and distinguished, so Def Leppard became the band’s new name. Elliott became an integral part of it as a singer and songwriter.

Elliott and Def Leppard’s biggest commercial success came between the early ’80s and the early ’90’s. Their debut album “On Through the Night” was released in 1980, but the second album “High ‘n’ Dry” (1981) was a big success and defined their style. Their next release “Pyromania” (1983) was a total hit and went Diamond with over 10 million copies sold in the US alone. However, the band’s fourth studio album “Hysteria” (1987) reached beyond the success of the previous one, and sold over 25 million copies worldwide – at that moment, Joe Elliot became a multimillionaire. Def Leppard released another seven albums, and sold over 100 million copies worldwide which makes them one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

Joe Elliott has worked with other musicians and in several projects such as tributes to fellow artists like Freddie Mercury, Alice Cooper, Ian Hunter, and David Bowie. In 1992, he appeared with Slash and Brian May at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Def Leppard fifth album “Adrenalize” was published in 1992, followed by “Slang” (1996), and “Euphoria” (1999).

Elliott had a short-lived project called “Cybernauts”, with Phil Collen; their only album was released in 2001. The “X” is Def Leppard’s eight studio release, published in 2002. “Yeah” in 2006 and “Songs from the Sparkle Lounge” (2008) came after, and the most recent of the group’s albums is called Def Leppard, released in 2015.

When it comes to his personal life, Joe Elliott currently resides in Dublin, but has a house in Los Angeles, as well. He owns a recording studio named “Joe’s Garage” in his home. His first wife was Karla Ramdhani; they married in 1989 and divorced in 1996. Elliott married Kristine in 2004, and they had their first child, Finlay, in 2009.

Joe Elliott Quotes

  • [on “Let’s Go”] It’s that three-minute pop-rock stuff with big chunky guitars and a big chorus. And it has that swaggering, mid-tempo rhythm, like ‘Sugar’, and ‘Rock Of Ages’. The idea was, we wanted something familiar. I mean, when AC/DC comes back after years away, you’re not going to get ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ from ’em, you know? And you don’t want it, either – you want ‘Back in Black’, or something like it. For us, this is what we do. And it’s something we enjoy doing.
  • I’m probably the biggest Mott (Mott the Hoople) fan on the planet. Morrissey (Morrissey) says he’s a bigger fan but he isn’t.
  • After you have a hit like Hysteria and you’re signed to the corporate machine it becomes an albatross around your neck. As much as our music is anthemic rock’n’roll it’s a business at the end of the day. It’s stressful and gets harder each time you make a record.
  • I was 17 when punk happened but I was still buying Queen and Thin Lizzy. We liked punk but didn’t want to be in a punk band. The first song we learned was Suffragette City. The good thing was that punk got rid of the 15 minute guitar solo.
  • We were only getting $50 a week when we started touring so I didn’t want to get into debt paying for TVs. There are lots of great rock bands who have never thrown a TV through a window. It’s not a prerequisite. I’ve always been more into the music than the groupies, drugs or smashing up hotel rooms.
  • I wanted to be in the biggest band in the world. And we were a couple of times. People in Britain don’t realise. We don’t get the credit we deserve in Britain. It’s nice to walk down Oxford Street without being recognised but then again when music magazines write about us they take the piss because we’re not as cool as Johnny Marr, who isn’t as successful as us by a million miles. Jools Holland won’t have us on his show because we’re not cool enough. Rock’s ploughed its own furrow for 30 years but still music magazines don’t give rock its due and still rave on about Nick Drake. How many more front covers do Paul McCartney and Morrissey (Morrissey) need? Our album will sell more than Morrissey’s so why don’t we get the same kind of respect? There are more people than Bono and Michael Stipe to put on the cover of a magazine. Whether it’s Simon Le Bon, Gary Kemp, Bruce Dickinson or me, there are more musicians out there. It’s not just Lennon (John Lennon) and Jim Morrison. Bands who have sold shit-loads of records, whether it be us or Depeche Mode, are becoming footnotes.
  • You better wake up and smell the roses before they’re on your coffin lid!
