Joan Jett Wiki Biography

Joan Marie Larkin was born on 22 September 1958, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA. As Joan Jett, she is an American rock star, best known for being the front-woman of the band “Joan Jett and the Blackhearts”. The bands anthem of rock and roll, “I Love Rock `n` Roll” was no.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 from 20th March to 1st May 1982. During that time her net worth, and also her fame, gradually grew, as a result of platinum-selling records. Before the Blackhearts, the band with which Jett rose to international fame, she had been in a similar project called “The Runaways” in 1975; an all-girl punk-rock band which Jett co-founded with drummer Sandy West. Their most notable hit was “Cherry bomb”. Jett is widely known as a singer and guitar player, but she has also tested the waters in acting, adding considerable amount to her net worth. She has been rocking all night and partying every day since 1975.

So how rich exactly is Joan Jett? According to sources it is estimated that Joan Jett`s net worth is $7 million, mostly gained by outstanding success of albums and her acting roles that are worth mentioning.

Although born in Philadelphia, her childhood was marked by frequent moves; when she was nine years old, the family moved to Rockville, Maryland, where she attended Junior High, and later Wheaton High school. Jett`s life changed direction when she got her first guitar at the age of 13. Already a rebellious teen, a guitar was all she needed to become the Queen of Rock `n` Roll she is today. Her parents signed her up for lessons, but she quickly withdrew, because her teacher wanted her to play folk music; nevertheless, she continued learning on her own. After that, her family moved to West Covina, in Los Angeles County California. Events of that sort gave Jett a chance to explore, and maybe enter the Los Angeles musical scene of the 1970s. She chose mothers maiden name, Jett, when her parents divorced, soon after the move to Los Angeles.

Joan entered the music scene with the band called “The Runaways”, a band which consisted of only girls with Joan Jett and Sandy West as founders, and in a short time they completed the line-up with Lita Ford, Jackie Fox and Cherrie Currie. The band became quite popular all around the world, especially in Japan, which added a nice amount to Jett`s net worth, although the band wasn`t accepted particularly well in North America. Nevertheless, band was rather influential with teenagers all around the world, releasing five albums until the break-up in 1979, leaving the hit song “Cherry Bomb” and others in silence.

After the break-up of the band Jett went on to pursue a solo career and moving to New York. With the help of producer Kenny Laguna, she released her first self-titled solo album. The album was first released only in Europe in May 1980, because it was rejected by 23 labels in the United States. But this dynamic duo found a way to publish the album by creating their own record label, “Blackhearts”. The album turned out to be quite a success, and after that endeavor, Jett decided to create her own band, “Joan Jett and the Blackhearts”. During the 80`s they released quite a number of hits, including “I Love Rock `n` Roll” as one of the most famous. Other hits include “Crimson and Clover”, “I Hate Myself for Loving You” and “Bad Reputation”.

Still rocking out and releasing new albums, Joan Jett’s rich career in rock music has spawned more than 15 albums. She was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. Her career in front of the camera is also worth mentioning. She has about 20 titles in which she has shown her acting skills.

Regarding her personal life, there has been continuing speculation about her sexuality, however Jett has never denied nor confirmed those speculations; suffice to say that she is not known to have a partner of either sex, so it has been an undisclosed question. She really loves animals, confirming that fact by being vegan for over 20 years. Jett is widely known as an active member of PETA organization, participating in every project she has time for.

Joan Jett Quotes

  • [on her refusal to appear in Edgeplay: A film about the Runaways] To me, the Runaways is my baby, so you have to understand my perspective. If there’s gonna be a Runaways movie, it should be about what we accomplished, the tours we did, the bands we played with, the people we inspired. I’m not gonna participate in a Jerry Springer fest, bottom line. With any band, you’re gonna have interpersonal conflicts, but if that’s what they thought the Runaways were about, about breaking a bass or putting on make-up, well, it’s very disappointing. Very, very disappointing. I wanted nothing to do with it because that’s not the band I was in. [The film] was a totally different take on what went down.
  • I don’t want to lessen my own achievements, but it’s just not that difficult [to play in a band]. If you’re in good health and like to travel, I don’t see why more women don’t automatically want to do it.
  • I think there’s nothing better than seeing a three-chord straight up rock ‘n’ roll band in your face with sweaty music and three minute good songs.
  • [When asked what would people find unique about her] That I’m not mean.
  • [on the symbolism of two of her tattoos in Budget Living magazine] The triangle on my chest represents the divinity of myself and others. The band around my arm represents the creative essence of life in a swirl of positive and negative forces.
