Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis Wiki Biography

James Harris III was born on the 6th June, 1959 in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, and Terry Steven Lewis was born on the 24th November, 1956 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. They are a team of songwriters and music producers, who have gained significant success since the early 1980s with several artists, especially Janet Jackson. The duo have won five Grammy Awards, whereas they have been nominated 11 times. They have been active in the entertainment industry since 1982.

How much is the net worth of Jimmy Jam? Authoritative sources estimate that the total size of the duo’s wealth is as much as $50 million, as of the data presented in the middle of 2016.

To begin with, Harris and Lewis founded their first band – Flyte Tyme – while still at high school together Jellybean Johnson and Monte Moir. The name Flyte Time was a phonetic variation of the song “Flight Time” by Donald Byrd. For a wider audience this band was known as The Time, and released the albums “The Time” (1981) and “What Time Is It?” (1982).

Afterwards, they increasingly began to shift their priorities to music production. While touring with Prince and the Revolution, The Time appeared as the opening act, however, the couple was fired from the tour because of a blizzard that left them unable to rejoin. After a short rest they returned to produce the music of The SOS Band, achieving excellent results because one of the songs they produced – “Just Be Good to Me” – became a huge success and solidified their reputation. During the production of the album “On the Rise” of the SOS Band, Jam and Lewis commuted between concerts with Prince and The Time recording studio. Under the name of Flyte Time Productions, the duo have produced various musicians such as Gladys Knight , Patti Austin and Thelma Houston since 1980. A decisive turning point in their career was a meeting with Janet Jackson in 1985, as the up-coming artist tried to pursue her career away from her famous siblings; The Jacksons and Michael Jackson were international superstars already. Janet Jackson’s third album, “Control”, appeared the following year and was recorded within six weeks, alongside the musical auspices of Jimmy Jams and Terry Lewis. Both for the duo as well as Janet this album is generally regarded as her last emancipation step into the music industry. It was very successful as the duo and Jackson won Grammy Awards. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced six more albums with Jackson; some of them were even more successful than “Control”.

Following this success, Perspective Records a private record label was founded by Harris and Lewis in the early 1990s. They were hired by such artists as Bobby Ross Avila, Smooth, Mint Condition, Lo-Key, Solo, Sounds of Blackness or Ann Nesby. They also produced Boyz II Men , Usher , Mary J. Blige , Mariah Carey , Gwen Stefani and Michael Jackson. At the beginning of February 2008, they played as the band The Time for the first time for almost 20 years, and in the middle of 2008, the band played a series of concerts in Las Vegas, USA.

To summarise, they are successful producers having 41 songs that reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, and 31 the Top 10 in the UK.

Finally, Terry Lewis was married to the American singer Karyn White. The couple is divorced and has a daughter. James Harris is single.
