Jayson was born into a sports oriented family, with several of his relatives playing professional baseball during their time. Growing up, he played with traveling youth teams and dominated youth baseball in Illinois. He then played for the Springfield Fame which won the Midwest Regional, and got third place during the 1993 Sandy Koufa World Series. Two years later, he was selected to play for the US Junior in the Pan Am Games. Jayson attended Glenwood High School, and during his time there gained more attention thanks to his baseball performances. He initially committed to play college baseball with the University of Georgia, but in 1997 he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the MLB draft, thes 22nd pick overall.

During the minor leagues, Werth played at first base and as a catcher, and also played outfielder before making his major league debut. However, before debuting for the Orioles, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, where he made his major league debut and played with them for two seasons, and was then traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2005, he suffered a wrist injury during spring training but still managed to play 102 games before undergoing surgery to repair ligament tears, which would cause him to miss the next season. In 2006 he signed a one year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies which increased his net worth a bit, but suffered another wrist injury the following year, returning after a few months, playing well with the Phillies and making a grand slam. In 2008, his contract was then extended for two years for $10 million, and he helped the team get to the 2009 National League Championship Series, plus being voted as the “Unsung Star of the Year”.

He played well for the Nationals despite having a difficult 2011 and an injury to his wrist in 2012. The following year, he got his 1000th career hit, and in 2016, he achieved his 200th career home run. During the following season he suffered a fractured bone in his foot, but returned after recovering from injury.
