James was very involved in music from an early age, and joined his first band at the age of 13. Later in his life, he worked as a schoolteacher, and as an amateur singer performing in nightclubs. In 1978, he joined Kool & the Gang and would become the band’s lead singer the following year.
They released the album “Ladies’ Night” which would become a platinum seller, and help the band propell into the mainstream, focusing on a mix of funk and R&B. The album’s success helped Taylor’s net worth, and releasing several top 10 singles – including “Too Hot” and “Ladies’ Night” – helped solidify his status as the frontman of the group. They would continue to release successful albums including “Celebration” in 1980, also certified platinum, and marked their first number one hit with “Celebration”. They continued to make hits that became popular internationally, including “Get Down on It” and “Joanna”. In 1993, he released the album “Baby I’m Back”, and his latest album would come seven years later entitled “A Brand New Me”.
Prior to the release of his fourth solo album, Taylor briefly reunited with Kool & The Gang to release the album “State of Affairs”, which received positive reviews from critics. but it wasn’t as commercially successful as their initial projects.
