James Alan Hetfield, simply known as James Hetfield, is a popular American singer, guitarist, record producer, as well as a songwriter. To audiences, James Hetfield is best known as the co-founder of “Metallica”, a heavy metal band formed in 1981 by Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Currently, the band consists of Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich. “Metallica” debuted in the music industry in 1983, with the release of their first studio album under the name of “Kill ‘Em All”, which over the years has sold more than three million copies worldwide and was eventually certified Platinum three times by the RIAA. However, it was the band’s third studio attempt called “Master of Puppets” that brought them the most commercial success and public exposure. Released in 1986, the album featured “Metallica’s” signifying song “Master of Puppets”, which became the band’s most frequently played song during live concerts. The song was also named one of the greatest heavy metal songs ever and was placed at #2 on the list of “The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All Time”. “Metallica’s” album of the same name is considered to be a masterpiece by many critics and is largely appreciated by the fans of the group, as it sold more than four million copies worldwide and was later certified Platinum six times by the RIAA. A nine-time Grammy Awards winner, “Metallica” is truly one of the most influential heavy metal bands, alongside “Megadeath” and “Slayer”.
A co-founder of “Metallica”, how rich is James Hetfield? Sources state that James Hetfield’s net worth is estimated to be $175 million. Undoubtedly, most of James Hetfield’s income and net wealth comes from his involvement in the music industry.
James Hetfield was born in 1963, in Downey, California, where he studied at Downey High School. Hetfield’s interest in music started when he was nine years old, when he took up piano lessons and gradually shifted to playing the guitar. Influenced by “Aerosmith”, “Queen”, “Misfits” and “AC/DC” among many other bands, James Hetfield made a decision to dedicate his life to music. When Hetfield joined Ulrich, he not only played the rhythm guitar but also provided the vocals for the band. “Metallica’s” popularity grew steadily until eventually they became known as one of the best heavy metal bands in the history of music. With “Metallica”, Hetfield recorded and released nine studio albums, the most recent being “Death Magnetic”, released in 2008. “Death Magnetic” album significantly differs from the band’s previous works in terms of style, yet this shift did not prevent it from landing a #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, making it “Metallica’s” fifth consecutive studio album to accomplish it. “Metallica’s” contributions to the music industry have been acknowledged with four American Music Awards, nine Grammy Awards and five Kerrang! James Hetfield Quotes
- [his thoughts following the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton] The only thing I could think was: The band? No way! There ain’t no band. The band is not the band right now. It’s just three guys. ]
- [on if the Metallica song “Ride the Lightning” was about capital punishment] Not exactly; I believe in capital punishment, but it was more like the idea of being strapped in the electric chair even though you didn’t commit the crime. That song, and others on the record, were about not being able to escape a situation. [Lars Ulrich and I are both control freaks, and the idea of not being able to get out of a bad situation is a fear we both have.
- [about the Metallica / Guns N’ Roses tour] Did I enjoy the tour? It was different. It was a good idea. We really had no idea what was going to come with it. They’re a different type of band–and I use the word “band” loosely. It’s a guy and some other guys. We were out to show people that there was something a little more progressive and hardcore than Guns N’ Roses. And to go about it our way. But it was hard going on, dealing with [Axl Rose] and his attitude. It’s not something we’d want to do again.
- Regret? That’s a screwed-up word.
- [Why Metallica survived after the death of Cliff Burton] Knowing Cliff’s attitude, he’d kick our butts if we quit.
- If I hadn’t had music in my life, it’s quite possible I’d be dead and I’d much rather be alive.
- There is something powerful in Metallica, a will, a drive.
- There is one Metallica. We have many styles, it’s called Metallica.
- [at the end of concerts] Thank you, friends!
