Born on the 17th May 1970, in New York City, USA, Hisham Tawfiq is a world-renowned actor, best known to the world as Dembe Zumba, one of the bodyguards and confidante of Raymond “Red” Reddington, played by James Spader in the NBC TV series ”The Blacklist”.

It was during his high school years that Hisham fell in love with performing arts; in one class, he read the famous poem “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by the most prominent author Maya Angelou, and his subsequent passion led him to the Negro Ensemble Company, which also helped Denzel Washington and Ossie Davis, among others in their acting training.

However, before Hisham started pursuing acting full-time, he served in the US Marines; he served in the Operation Desert Storm from 1994 until 1996. Upon his discharge, he worked as a Corrections Officer in Sing Sing Correctional Facility, located in Ossining, New York.

Hisham’s was gradually developing his career, and in 2009 was cast in his first recurring role, as Serviceman Walter in the TV series “Kings”, while he also made an appearance in the biopic about rapper Notorious B.I.G., entitled “Notorious”, starring Jamal Woolard, Anthony Mackie and Derek Luke, then also featured in several short films, and had a few support appearances in such films as “Dead Man Down” (2013), and “Redemption” (2013).

Late in 2013 he made his breakthrough, with the role of Dembe Zuma in “The Blacklist”; his character was made regular in the third season, after Hisham earned massive popularity for his portrayal of the particular character, but also significantly raised his net worth. So far, he has appeared in over 95 episodes of the popular series. Following his rise, Hisham started looking for other engagements, and in 2015 featured in the comedy film “America Free”, and then appeared in the crime drama film “Dope Friend”, starring Sasha Allen, Bruce Apar and Kenneth Arias, which also added to his net worth. Most recently, he started working on the drama film “Jinn”, scheduled for release late in 2018.

In addition to his acting career, Hisham has also been serving as a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department, which has also added somewhat to his net worth.
