To begin with, the boy was raised in Berlin, Massachusetts, and was educated at the Worcester Art Museum’s Art School. After graduation he went on to create three dimensional animals for the company entitled Union Products Inc.

Concerning his professional career, he has created more than 750 lawn ornaments. He began with those of a boy with a dog as well as a girl holding a watering can. In 1957, Don created another well known lawn ornament – the duck named Charlie. Then another sculpture – the birth in Coggshall Park – was released. In 1958, he received an offer to create a pink flamingo as at that time pink colour was very popular. So, the artist used photographs of real flamingos and created one. Soon, flamingos became very popular, and due to the huge popularity of the creation, the artist placed his own signature on the original sculpture to distinguish between original and fake ones. In 1996, the artist won Ig Nobel Art Prize, and the same year he was appointed to serve as the President of Union Products, and held this position until his retirement in 2000.

In 2001, the signature of the artist was removed from the sculpture and finally, the production of the pink flamingo sculpture was closed at the end of 2006. In 2010, the right to make copies was bought by Cado Products, and the flamingos returned to the shops.
