Born Glenn Anton Rivers in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, he attended Wisconsin‘s Marquette Univeristy where he played in the college‘s basketball team and lead a good professional basketball player career before becoming a coach – he was already playing in the NBA when he graduated. By the way, River‘s nickname was given to him by Rick Morajus, who called him “Doc“ after seeing Rivers wear a Dr. J t-shirt in the summer basketball camp. Everyone at the camp started calling him that too, and the name stayed.
Rivers started his basketball career as a player. After three season of playing with Marquette Univeristy, he was picked to play with the Atlanta Hawks in 1983. He played in the US national team and won silver in FIBA World Championship in 1982. Later he was selected an NBA All-Star in 1988 and even won Walter Kennedy‘s Citizenship Award in 1990. In 1991 he joined the Los Angeles Clippers, then in 1992 the New York Knicks, and after that, from 1994 he played with the San Antionio Spurs until he retired as a basketball player in 1996 with an already big net worth. Through his career, he scored a total of 9,377 points, and was credited with 4,889 assists and 1,653 steals.
He began coaching in 1999. The first team he coached was the Orlando Magic. After he was fired in 2003 due to dissapointing performance in the first season, he worked as a TV analyst for a year until he found a job with the Boston Celtics, which team won the NBA Championship for the first time in 2008. It was rumoured that he would retire in 2011, but shortly after it was reported that Rivers had signed a five-year contract with the Celtics worth $35 million. Not only did he stay in the game, his net worth received a huge boost. In 2013 he started coaching the Clippers, and they won 57 games with him in the first season. Thanks to that, River received a promotion that earned him the title of President of Basketball Operation along with a bigger salary. It also helped him substantially raise his net worth. In the same year Doc reached 400 wins with the Clippers team. In 2014 he signed another five-year contract with Clippers so his future seems bright.
Besides coaching, Rivers is also a member of the National Advisory Board for Positive Coaching Alliance, a non-profit organization that helps young athletes and coaches. Rivers now lives in Florida with his wife and four children, who all also are into sports. His son Austin was picked to play with the New Orleans Hornets as the 10th pick in 2012, and his eldest son Jeremiah has played for the Maine Red Claw. His daughter Callie played in the Florida University volleyball team. Even Spencer, Doc‘s youngest son will be playing for UC Irvine.
